Here is a way to bring back old dead favorites:

STORY:
The Earth Warriors have managed to destroy the Deadly Alliance and with Quan-Chi presumed dead and Shang Tsung powerless they leave Outworld to return home. But Reptile has unleashed the spirit of the Dragon King in his own body and with the help of a necromancer, Dairou, he has created an army of once dead warriors. After invading the Earth they kill off a number of heroes and only Rayden remains. With no other choice he makes his way into Outworld to track down Shang Tsung and with his help a new group of heroes from the past are brought back including Kabal and both the original Kung Lao and Sub-Zero. With this new group of warriors and more to come, chosen by the Elder Gods, the sixth tournament begins and the Dragon Realm awaits.

FACTS:

-Kung Lao, Kitana, Jax, Li Mei, Kenshi, Sonya, Kitana, Bo Rai Cho, Cyrax, Frost and Sub-Zero have had their souls taken by the Dragon King.
-Kano, Hsu Hao, Quan-Chi, Moloch and Nitara are presumed missing or are dead.
-Liu Kang and Shao Kahn are released when the Dragon King attempts to kill Shang Tsung by stealing his souls. Scorpion returns when Sub-Zero returns. Ermac is recreated by other souls used by the Dragon King and Smoke reboots himself after sensing Shao Kahn. Mavado and Drahmin, who has the spirit of Quan-Chi in him, join the Dragon Army and Baraka is brought back to life to serve the Dragon King.
