ive seen a few of you saying things like "it hasnt been confirmed" and "we dont even know that it will be online"...

i got the new egm in the mail today (171) on page 76 it celebrates mk1 10th ann...

on the second page of the "story", it talks aboout "kurrent projects" to wich ed boon says:

"im working on a follow up to mkda. our big thing that we're researching now is playing online. a lot of the magic of mortal kombat was the whole arcade social scenario, where youre playing strangers, and how many wins in a row you could get, king of the hill, and all that stuff. that was a really huge part of the games success. so we really feel that online is the potential next way to re-create that whole phenomenon. we dont have a ship date yet, but were shooting for sometime in 2004"

Great, now we have in on paper. ]ombat did post something on the front page back on May 27, 2003. Here's a copy/paste of what the message read:

"We were able to obtain some of the first exclusive details of the next major Mortal Kombat release by series co-creator, Ed Boon. This will hopefully settle some confusion of news of the game in recent magazine publications. This information we received on MK6 came personally from Ed Boon himself while we were covering this year's E3 convention in Los Angeles. From our conversation:

MK6 will use an improved version of the MK:DA engine; there will not be a complete rewrite.

The next installment of Mortal Kombat will feature more platform-specific code.

Each version of MK6 will use the same engine, but it will be tweaked to use the strengths of each specific console.

The focus will be more on pushing each system to its limit, as opposed to trying to keep all 3 versions of the game as close to each other as possible.

The backgrounds will be much more interactive than anything we've seen yet. When asked about background items that could impale you, Ed assured us, "That's only the beginning."

Multiple fatalities are an extreme definite.

An online component is confirmed, and will play a major role in the game.

The game, which is currently referred to as "MK6", has not yet been officially named. Chances are, however, that the final name will include a subtitle like Deadly Alliance and Tournament Edition, and not the number 6. MK5.ORG will follow the development of Mortal Kombat 6 straight to its completion, which is reported to be released sometime in 2004."

Of course, all these things sound very nice. An improvement on MKDA will keep MK heading the right direction in the future. Hopefully I have spaced that right, anyhow... as said above, the addition of the online feature will give MK that 'arcade' feel that gave it its popularity so long ago.

No they only posted an "online component" which could mean anything. That's what I questioned. Boon didn't confirm it WILL be online even in the paragraph you just posted. He just said they're doing research on it. I'm still skeptical. But atleast this sheds some new light on the issue that they're trying to get online play up. If they do, suhweeeeeeeeeeeeet grin.
