The storyline and the characters. They have only been the strongest elements in MK. Look at the other fighting games - DOA for example - the story with that is people fight one another to win money - ha c'mon when you compare that to MK's dense and in-depth story you laugh. I think MK Deception with really put the story to its maximum potential - its a safe bet that MK ahs the best storyline out of all the fighting games out. The flaws in MK are the gameplay, a few silly characters, and the fatalities - erm, hold on, ok the fatalities controvesrsialised the franchise and gave it the wow factor and gore astonishment, but that floundered with every game that was released and it died with MKDA, but MKD could be a worthy contender to fixate the fatalities and really give the critics the shock factor and the controversy MK was once crowned for. REASON FOR THIS POST: Don't know, completely talking garbage and completely and utterly bored.

I will say it's the story, the characters, the blood, fatalities, death traps and alot of characters.
For me it's the story and characters. But not all. Some of the characters seem really stupid (Stryker), but then there are others who are really cool. I think one thing that brings people back to MK is the hope that their favourite characters will be in the next game. It's sometimes fun to see how they've been changed and upgraded.
The first game didn't seem to have much plot. Just some martial artsy people on an island beating the crap out of each other. But then in MKII this great new world was created. I hope that in future MKs this continues to be the basis of the games.

I think the storyline and gameplay of MK:DA are better then most fighting games. I don't know any other game where you have 3 different styles to choose from. One of them being a weapon. While some of the other fighting games may be a little more fluid and have a more complex combo system added with a lame storyline, imo that dosen't make a for better fighting game. MK draws you in with the storyline, fighting engine has some flaws but their tweaking it for MK:D. When you play with a character you like and know their story it helps you get in to it makes you feel like your fighting for reason and not just for some money. I played DOA3 everyday up until MK:DA came out haven't played DOA since. No fighting game touchs the MK series.

MK has a lot going for it and it always has.
Great intense Fighting via the Great Gameplay. (2D or 3D). Then ontop of that you have the Violence. Blood. Fatalities.

erm no. i'll give you it's got the best story but the different fighting styles aren't that impressive, some styles are unfairly better than others not to mention that alot of the weapon styles were the same, it's not really that good.
alot of stuff that should be in a fighting game is sorely lacking.
and if Dead or Alive is the only other series you've been playing on recently i'm not suprized you think that way.
if you still need convincing i suggest you go this this thread here
