I fear that this could be the end of the MK as we know it. Viacom is a big company, but i believe it's a conservitive company that may kill what we all love about Midway and the Mk series. I am weeping and my flame is deminishing now ...

Hehe just kidding!

What's the thoughts about Mortal Kombat by Viacom?

So far, Viacom has only had two good things about them in their entire history; Beavis and Butt-Head and Headbangers Ball. That's it! I am kinda suspicious about what this means for the MK series. It really doesn't look good.

bad things come on now. have a little faith bloodline666, hey it could of been worst ms or sony could of bought midway out and made the mk games exclusive on a sony system or just on a xbox. but with viacom it assures the mk games will be on all systems, i see this buy out from viacom as a good thing.

I'd rather Microsoft bought Midway. I already have to buy an Xbox because MK:Deception isn't gonna be on the Gamecube.furious

And if MK was made specificly for Xbox, the graphics would be much better, and since Microsoft has loads of money, they could put a lot more money into MK. And that would lead to a better game.

I don't get why everyone is saying this... Think about it, Viacom is a corporation and just like every corporation on the planet it's goal is to make money. Right now, Mortal Kombat is almost single handedly Midway's #1 money maker so it would be incredibly stupid and illogical to shut down or censor something that will make them money in the end.

Relax people, relax.

HEY! What about us PS2 users, we after all buy more games as a group than Xbox users. tongue

(Not trying to start a console war, the only reason why I have a PS2 because its backplayable to my PS1 games.)

Anyways, it might be a good thing that Viacom is buying Midway. Think about it, they might actually give the MK people more money to spend in developement of future games. This means all the extras everyone has been wanting (i.e. FMV endings) might become a reality. If Viacom is smart, they will let the Midway people do what they do best and give them the means to do it.

It isn't that simple. I'm not sure how well versed you are in corporate dealings, but anytime there is a merger, takeover, or what have you, things will get shaken up. The degree to which this is going to happen really depends on allot of factors.

MK's dev crew and/or MK itself could end up being severely changed/canned all together, or, MK's dev crew and/or MK itself could end up not being touched. Granted, the odds are overwhelmingly in favor of the latter (or close to it) but the truth is that you never really know until... well... you know. Some decisions made in business seem very logical to those of us not involved, while others seem absolutely mind boggling because we aren't privy to all of the facts.

You would be surprised how much "making a profit" is being replaced with "not making enough of a profit" these days.

I'm sure things will all be fine (ie there is no reason to panic), but Midway being gobbled up by a larger company DOES mean something. Precisely what however, remains to be seen.

I'm not sure if any of you played the game but, look what 989 did to Twisted Metal once they took control of that game. That's right, they ruined it. It sucked. They ruined the series. I'm afraid that Viacom would do that to Mortal Kombat. They aren't experienced with making the Mortal Kombat games and they wouldn't know where to start. And if they did make it, i'm afraid it would suck.

Viacom is NOT buying Midway. The CEO of Viacom is thinking about PERSONALLY buying Midway, in the same way that I am going to buy some stock in Midway this week. This is completely different. There will NOT be a merger!

Its called news. Look into it. And Midway isn't selling MK, Summer Redstone is buying Midway itself.

So if Viacom buys Mk then does that mean that Ed and the rest of the team wont be working on Mk anymore??? As long as they r working on the game i dont see how it could end the Mk series. But im not sure this whole thing works on the buying stuff so they could end up not even working on it.

Ok, as from now, none of the teams are being changed/merged/axed. Neither is Midway becoming part of Viacom. Summer Redstone is just buying the company HIMSELF, as one person, like he is buying a new Mercedes or a new mansion. Don't think that Midway is gonna go "crap" with Viacom in charge, because really David Zucker is still the CEO and the company is going to rise and rise in quality. This buyout will help Midway ALOT.

Stop complaining.

Wonderful, sounds like some restructuring we be going on. Hopefully for the better. Midway needs a few more CASH COWS in their lineup or it could get worse for them.

Well, if you go to the link in my second post and read the rest of the article you'll understand that Sumner will be putting his daughter at the helm of midway. I dont really know what Sumner is trying to do, but for some reason he wanted to be represented on the Midway board more than likely to change things as he see's fit VIA his daughter. We will see what comes of this...

Yeah, I read a link post that his daughter was up for a position. Also, was a speculation that he would buy it himself, restructure and sell to Viacom. Of course it was speculation of reselling to Viacom, not that he intended to do so.

Whatever happens, As long as the MK Team is unchanged and can continue with the ongoing Universe of MK, I will be ok with it.
