okay here is my theory. the symbol was the dk's mark. he put it every where all through out outworld and the realms he counquered. the elder gods used the symbol to create the mortal kombat tournament as a defense as a reminder to what could happen if your realm was beaten afterwords.

That's a pretty good theory for the dragon symbol. But I'm sure Midway didn't plan it like that.

I like the theory, and you never know, they may adopt a similar theme for deception.

But the MK guys never planned it (I think...) here is a pic of a box cover of Enter the Dragon (which MK1 was loosely based on) but called 'Operation Dragon' I guess it's from France.

Notice the dragon, the same it was on the MK1 select screen:

At first Reptile was not, but then shortly after(say 1 version later), they added the clues and his name was Reptile. So Reptile was named Reptile pretty earlier on and for quite good reasons. Reptile was green first of all, and like a lizard, Reptile could copy his opponents move's like he did with Sub-Zero's and Scorpion's.

But the theory is very good. I think it could be used somewhat, cause there is some minor flaws. Mainly the part about losing the tournament since that could happen and the Dragon King would still be asleep. It was Reptile(the chosen one) who awakened him, not the tournament what so ever.

But maybe the Dragon King had those symbols all over every place he ruled to show his mark. And then Shao Kahn and Shang Tsung found out about these markings and used them for MK since people feared these markings. That's the best I can come up with.

I love the theory. I actually hope the dragon symbol is somehow also related to the black/red dragon. Perhaps these clans hold a mystery the dragon king alone knows that he hid in one of their members or something similar such as legends or stuff.

Probably he can use this clans as a source of power for black arts to attack earth realm, since they are earths most powerful criminal organizations, the DK can very well have an important use of them.

Great theory! I posted a theory in the MKDA forum a long time ago as I thought the symbol might represent the Black Dragon.

If the symbol belongs to the DK, it means that MK's story up until now was already known from the beginning, or was written so that it would eventually lead to a dragon like character being put into the story.

It's a good theory but I doubt when Midway started MK they planned on there being a Dragon King. I think sense it's a Asian based game they picked the Dragon. To symbolize the Mortal Kombat tournament that is my theory.

The creators of Mortal Kombat, or maybe it was just John Tobias...was inspired by old Kung Fu movies so perhaps the Dragon symbol is derived from that Bruce Lee movie. However, I believe that the Dragon symbol symbolizes a connection with the Shaolin and their religion of Chan Buddhism.

Every Martial Art movie in this world have the dragon symbol because it's the japanese symbol for Martial Arts.Look at dragonballz, samurai jack, they all have it,the JetLi movies so end of discussion.
