My complaint against EGM.... if anyone cares
I have been an EGM subscriber since the issue with Mario world has come out. Each month I anxiously look forward to the splendors of EGM that arrive in my mail box. You guys are usually great on featuring up coming and new titles. I know for a fact that the fighting genre has gone down the tubes since soul caliber 2. But that was in the past. Dont you folks still sit down and have a good old bout between scorpion and subzero from MK 2. You know you still get a kick when you splatter your opponent on concrete from the pit 2. Well, the fighting genre may become king once again. Rumors, interviews, and confirmed information from Ed boon himself have many fans like me drooling over the upcoming title Mortal Kombat Deception. Ever single game magazine has featured well over 2 pages of game play footage, interviews, and updates. As for my beloved EGM, a crappy quarter page cliff note. This game may be huge, so guys do your homework and feature this title in your next issue. Androyd6

In Spain occurs the same, but... tomorrow (5/1/2004) appears the Preview of MKDeception in his website (according to GameSpot).

Perhaps they surprise to us, perhaps......

Hmm, in general fighting games are simply much more popular in Japan than in the US and certainly Europe. I think that's the reason...

Even when MK was in it's prime (MK1, 2, but don't get me wrong, I think it's heading there again with MK:DA and MK:D) EGM always took the attitude that "MK is a good solid gore fest, but not as good of a pure strategic fighting game as Street Fighter." They used to compare the two, and lo and behold, SF always won. Still, I don't think that's why EGM doesn't cover MK. It's more the fighting genre in general. They barely covered Tekken 4, even if it sucked, and I don't remember an overwhelming amount of Soul Calibur 2 info. I'm sure it got a few pages here and there, but nothing like a five, six, or seven page layout or anything.
EGM focuses more on games that everyone seems to be talking about. Final Fantasy, Halo 2, Metal Gear Solid, Madden, Grand Theft Auto etc. It's not just that though, the focus on genres. RPG's, FPS, Sports, Stealth, and free roaming shooters are all very popular right now. That's why you'll see "who gives a shit" games like The Getaway on the cover, and why games like Driver 3, KOTOR, MLB 2005, and Splinter Cell will always get the page space over even the best looking fighting games.
It's a shame, because people still play fighting games. MK:DA sold 2.8 million copies. It's a greatest hit, and EGM barely covered it. MK is one of the most storied franchises in all of videogames. The government hearings, the violence, the additions, the fall of the series and subsequent rising, etc. All of these things and much much more are what keep the fans interested in this series and EGM just doesn't get it. To be fair though, they've had more info than Gamepro, who I thought would definitely have info on a new MK game. But a tiny little rectangle doesn't really count in my book.
My advice though would be, and I reccomend this to everyone. I'll even capitalize the heading for this.
READ THIS IF NOTHING ELSE:
Don't sit on this site and complain about how MK isn't getting any attention in EGM. EGM probably doesn't even know that this site exists. They're that out of it. It's not pokemon or Dance Dance, so it's probably off of their radar. You have to E-MAIL EGM and COMPLAIN TO THEM. Tell those clueless dolts that people still play fighting games, even if the media has stopped covering them. Tell them that you want new info on this game, pages of it. Not just another blown up screenshot of Halo 2 or pages devoted to the different color outfits Solid Snake can wear. In short: BE HEARD. If they ignore you, fine, but the more people send e-mails, the greater the chance (hopefully) of EGM actually giving a shit.
On a related note: When the hell is X-play going to do a preview? E3? God I hope so. I can't wait to see this game in action on my TV!!

Very true. I'm going email EGM right now.

Actually, EGM used to be a HUGE supporter of MK.
I've been following MK ever since I first saw their review of the original Mortal Kombat arcade game in their Quarter Munchers section of their mag, and they ALWAYS had all the hottest and newest info of every MK arcade game and home version that came after that.
What happened though, EGM(Electronic Gaming Monthly) had been promised (probably by someone at Midway) that they were going to be the first to see MK:DA and that they would have the rights to show it first. EGM then posted at the tail-end of one of their issues that they would have a massive preview of Mortal Kombat:Deadly Alliance in their next issue with tons of info and screenshots. And I distictly remember this, because I've been a long-time reader of their mag since 1991 and was extremely excited about it.
However, somehow everything changed and Game Informer ended up getting the exclusive rights to the very first screenshots and info of the game, and I think that was a major slap in the face to EGM. They were lied to, man! And they were one of the reasons for their success (major exposure and promotional advertising through the years).
Then in the next issue (which was supposed to be the big unveiling of MK:DA), they were then forced to issue an apology to all their readers for not getting the story.
So what I think happened then was, EGM became bitter about it and decided to say ''Well, screw MK then.'' And when they finally did get their hands on MK:DA, they just gave it a half-assed review in response to the whole thing. And I'm sure that's what will happen with Mortal Kombat: Deception as well. They'll of course compare the graphics to Dead Or Alive 3, talk about how it's not as deep as Virtua Fighter 4, and say that you should only buy it if you're a hardcore MK fan. And that's typical, there's a lot of politics in the gaming business.
On a somewhat-related note, what ever happened to Sushi-X - anybody know? I think I had heard that he had left EGM awhile back, but wasn't sure why he left, and if he had signed on with another mag or not.

I just checked EGM's review for MK:DA, it was given a 5/10 & a 6/10, huh...selling 2.8 million copies seems ppl are crazy about 'average' and 'dissappointing' games by thier standards.
Too bad EGM, seems no one bought ur silly review and went buying the game.
