My support for MK VS DC Universe
First off,
let me say I was shocked to hear that certain trademark elements of the MK franchise were going to change due to this merger...Mixing Mortal kombat with DC requires a negotiation on what content from both games to have.
anyways, i originally hated the idea....as soon as i heard that the next Mk title WAS going to be a VS title after all, as some rumours had mentioned, i was excited...until I discovered that the fatality system was going to take a big hit. This caused a huge outrage in me...it truly shocked and disappointed me.
I mean, when Ed Boon was mentioning that the next gen MK was going to stick to its roots, be dark, gritty and very serious, i got truly excited. I was even more excited to hear that Ed Boon was inspired by Gears of War, which is a fantastic gruesome game, and was planning on using the Unreal engine to power the next MK title. I was thinking "awesome, gory and cinematic fatalities!"
I mean, i couldn't wait to hear the announcement and see what new ideas he had.
And then i hear that this new Versus title was going to be Teen rated.. i mean, WTF man? There goes the fatalities...
But then again...as I closely read some of the articles..they only mention the limitations on the DC characters. People were wondering what kind of finishing moves Batman and Superman might have...and that's where the limitation are in.
Ultimately, i believe that there is going to be alot of changes and flexibility in this game. Perhaps some characters might have some spectacular, although not-so-gruesome or bloody endings, but spectacular never the less, while others will. This new mortal kombat title is going to be more about the gameplay and story...rather than it's trademark fatality system.
let's face it...MK: armageddon's fatality system sucked..and even more so the character endings....i mean, what i enjoy are the unique fatalities that Mortal kombat had for each character, not a pool of killing moves that all the fighter's shared! and the text endings for each character...my goodness...it seemed obvious the fatality system was getting pretty old and worn out. the series needed a serious reboot...
i will trade this idea for awesome gameplay and a great story line any day... and about the fatality system...well, how about a finishing move system akin to the Killer Instinct fighiting game...i don't know about you guys, but Killer Instinct, back in the day, was an awesome fighting game. I thought it had the most awesome combo system. and the finishing moves were not even gory....and they were pretty cool to watch!
Finally, i think Ed Boon wants to appeal to a more massive audience this time around with the T rating, and gain a bigger crowd by the time the next mortalkombat game. in other words, the teenagers of today who were disinterested or not fully aware of mk and more of DC fans will become aware of Mk now, and by the time the next mk comes in, they will be old enough and more inclined to get it...and that MK will perhaps be a truly gory one...back to it's good old roots. I think that's a pretty clever marketing strategy.
In the end, i have changed my mind and show my full support for this game. I hope that they make it a strong, cinematic experience, with awesome gameplay, gorgeous graphics, and where some characters may have pretty bloody finishers, and while others, (superman?) may simply have spectucular, but not so bloody finishers...that's sounds like a pretty good compromise to me.
the team has already said they are working with ESRB to see what they can put in the game and are well aware of what MK fans want. I don't think they will disappoint in the end.
Besides, there are other games coming out that will fulfill mybloodlust:
fallout 3
project origin
gears of war 2...to name a few
So, let's have an open mind about this game. Let's give it a chance. Let's give the gory fatality system a break now...i mean, perhaps will still have some of that gore...but let's welcome a change into mortal kombat where the dark and gritty tone comes into the storyline and gameplay, and not so much in the finishers....
i'm sure we'll have an awesome, story driven fighting game...something i have been craving for in a long time...
THanks for reading!

I agree with you 1000%!! I mean...ok...I really got dissappointed to read that the fatalities were out...but c'mon we'll live with it! Boon said from the beggining that it's a reboot!! REBOOT do you haters know what a reboot is?
Anyway I like the idea of finishing moves, and now that we know that the character roster is gonna be about 20-22 I think that each one will have a different "finisher" let's call it. For example while Sub Zero could freeze his opponent and then finish him off with a flying kick or just throw ice him and finish him of with an upper cut without ripping his head off...just breaking him into small pieces of ice, Superman could grab his opponent bring him to the ground and start punching him breaking all his face bones! Nothing really gory about it yet it'll be fucking awsome to watch!
What I am tryin' to say is...chill out guys... ok...the fatalities are a trademark for the series but c'mon, the "finishers" could be great...they have pottential, look at Def Jam:Fight for NY or Marvel Nemesis. They had great finishers!
That's all I have to say!
PEACE!

If your opinion was a person I'd have sex with it. That's how much I like it.
