Here are some of my theories on certain things in MKD
1. The DK was the king of the Raptors(the species of Reptile)and when defeated he waited for a rapture to come near his egg and posses the body and transform into the DK and Reptile was at the wrong place at the wrong time and the wrong species.
2. The hanging dead bodies on the ship are bodes that the DK used to bring back his undefeated army.
3. The DK needed the spirit of the Mortal Kombat Champion, Liu Kang, to make his attempt to rule the earthrelm successful. He kills Shang Tsung and is able to control Liu Kang's soul.

To your first point, that is a possibility. I prefer to think as the Dragon King as being just a title for now. He doesn't have to be reptilian or a dragon in any way to have that name.
To your second point, he won't need those bodies. Shang Tsung and Quan Chi have already revived his army.
And finally to your third, many have had that same theory. We'll have to wait and see how true it is.
