Game wise, yeah, they are there to provide a "best of three" competition that any fighting game needs. But fluff wise, in a fight to the death, there would not be "rounds"..it would be one continuous fight. Each "round" is how the battle "could have gone" fluff wise. And with the addition of death traps, it seems that "how the battle could have gone" each round seems a bit more realistic and "MKish" now. Does that make sense? |
Fatalities are MK's trademark. I see absolutely no point in even having them anymore if your opponent doesn't DIE after being ripped into hot dog chunks. There is no "what if" scenario in a fight in Mortal Kombat. Its either do or die, and being resurrected after dying in the middle of a fight is the dumbest thing I've heard of. Having death traps last for each round is the equivalent of doing a FATALITY each round. It's pointless, and ruins the whole concept of finishing your opponent off.
On a side note, a "round" in fighting is very much real. When you knock an opponent down and they struggle to get up (15-30 seconds), but eventually do, that would be Round 2.
