I'm not entirely sure what the right forum for this thread is, I'm assuming this is fine, but if it actually belongs in Fan Submissions or something, since it's technically about an artistic resource, the mods can go ahead and move it.

So anyway...in the promo materials for MK4, every character's name was displayed in a different font to add a bit of individuality. You may recall some examples, like Sub-Zero's name looked the same as it does in the MK Mythologies logo. Deadly Alliance's bios did it too, but they looked a bit more generic and hard to identify there.

Over the years, I've actually managed to find out what some of these fonts are, as they're all apparently pre-existing commercial fonts (and most of them are free for download somewhere, though some I can only find for sale, and the prices for fonts are ridiculously high. Who would pay $30 for a typeset?!) and I thought it might be interesting to some people here to know as well, or that they might potentially be able to identify the ones that I haven't yet.

So here are the ones I know:
---

Font = "Shlop"
(Thanks to ]{0MBAT)

---

Font = "Blade Runner"

---

Font = "Neue Aachen Pro Black"

---

Font = "Brush Script" and "Aachen Bold"

---

Font = "Ortem"

---

Font = "Carlos Light"

---

Font = "Goodfellow"

---

Font = "Adams Bold" by CanadaType

---

Font = "Abaddon"

---

Font = "Ogilvie"

---

Font = "Exocet Light"

---

Font = "Swaak Centennial"

---

Font = Warlock"
(Thanks to ]{0MBAT)

---

Font = "Hirosh"

---

Font = "Chokko"

---

Font = "Desdemona Black"

---

Font = "Kino"

---

And here's the ones I am as of yet unable to identify:

(Note that I'm fairly sure Raiden and Fujin's use the same font)

Scorpion's is Warlock (was also used for the word "ULTIMATE" in the UMK3 logo)

So even though I had a priori knowledge of Scorpion's font, I decided to try my hand again at this. First, I used my meager Photoshop skills to create plain black-and-white versions of the fonts:

As you can see, I also spaced out the letters in many cases. This would be important so that websites I uploaded them to could more easily recognize where one letter ends and another begins.

Next, I uploaded the images to WhatTheFont. It didn't recognize a single one of them, not even Scorpion.

I tried a competing site, WhatFontIs. I was able to have a bit better luck, and it recognized Baraka as a font called "Shlop Regular". FWIW, it also recognized Scorpion's. So, I certainly have a better impression of this site now.

So, 2 down, 3 to go. Maybe if you posted the remaining images to a Font-based forum, you could find out what they are, as well.

Are you going to attempt the MKDA ones next?

I tried this as well, that's how I got most of the ones that I do have names for. I didn't know WhatFontIs existed though, thanks.

As for the MKDA ones...I dunno, it kinda depends on how interested anybody else is. Like I said, I found a lot of the ones in that game kinda generic looking...like I kinda expect the list to turn up answers like "Times New Roman", "Arial", and "Impact"...
For what it's worth though, I can tell that they used Warlock again for Scorpion, and Shang Tsung's is the Deadly Alliance in-game text font, which can be found at MKWarehouse. It looks like Quan Chi's uses Abaddon, too.

I would love it if you would give MKDA (and MKTE) a try. Maybe separate them into categories -- ones that you can get, and ones that are just too generic. I tried Bo Rai Cho's and managed to identify it as "Polo".

I suppose I could give it a shot.

'Course anyone else in the community who gives a crap about this sort of thing is absolutely welcome to contribute too.

Well, this was unexpected. But I guess to be expected, actually, considering WB's ownership of the MK property.

I was reading Superman - The New 52 (#15) when I saw a great remake of the Scorpion logo (using the same font, Warlock) used in MK4/MKDA/etc., used for the title logo:

"Because I'm A Scorpion"

Love the custom scorpion-tail for the S in Scorpion's name.

Note that the character does not appear nor is he mentioned at all. It's an allusion to the fairy tale of the scorpion and the frog, where the last thing the scorpion says to the frog is "because I'm a scorpion".

I might not be surprised if this is the logo used for Scorp in future MK games. We shall see.

21 years of this game franchise being in existence and Boon and Co. never once used that "S" design. Amazing.

Well it looks like an artist added the tail himself, because that's not part of the regular font.

Personally, I find Warlock a little bit boring for Scorpion. I've been using the font "Dark Crystal" for his name in my own artwork.
