Quan Chi is to blame for Kangs return! Given his ending, he could be responsible. He killed Shang and Kano therefore allowing Kangs soul access to Kanos body! However, theyve said Kang is back as a zombie and spirit. So maybe Quan isnt entirely to blame.
Kang may be in Kanos body and the presence of his soul is rotting Kanos body turning him zombie like. Since Kano is dead already, the presence of Kangs soul is speeding up the decay. Or maybe Kanos body is now becoming more spirit like! This would of course result in Quan taking the blame for his return unless it was Shangs fault.
For it to be Shangs fault, he would have had to have released Kangs soul. I seriously doubt Shang would give up the soul of his greatest enemy and so I dont believe hed have done this. However if he did, then Kang could be in the body of one of the DKs army members. Thatd make him zombie like, maybe. For him to be a spirit, maybe his soul has been turned into a ghost as he has unfinished business. He wants to defeat Shang one last time or something. Or again, Shang is alive, but Kano did get killed and Shang had released Kangs soul so it went into Kanos body.
If none of this has happened, then how do you think he has returned?

Well those are good theories, I'd lean toward it being Tsung's fault myself.
If the story in MKDA never happened, however, I would think that this happens in the opening of MKD. The Deadly Alliance stand defeated, and this is likely due to the death of the two sorcerors. Once Shang has died all of the souls he has consumed are set free. They all continue to the afterlife, except for Liu, who still feels like he has something to do...so he tries to reinhabit his body resulting in the zombie effect. ??? just a theory.

LOL. I love the title of this thread!
Very good theories, this is what I think:
Shang Tsung somehow survived but is in a very weakened state. He has lost his powers over souls (not all of them) and Liu Kangs soul managed to escape.
The soul wanders searching for a body. And the only one available could be:
One of the dead army.
Or one very ugly one of himself.

That is possible also. When they're defeated his soul would be free form Shangs body. He could enter one of their bodies or maybe seek out his own.

Luckyly, the endings of Quan Chi & Shang Tsung are confirmed that didn't happen.
Not because it returns Liu Kang in these forms, and sincerely, I hope to take much in knowing it, because she is one of histories that create more sense of expectancy to me.

lol I'm glad you like the title! Shang survives? Wouldn't he try to save himself? And whose is this ugly body you speak of?

That's good to know they didn't happen. Which leaves room to know that they are still in fact alive. So exactly how has Kang come back then? His soul would still be in Shangs body!

I think that Shang was defeated by Kung Lao and Liu's soul was captured by the DK. The DK then kidnaps Kitana and forces Liu to serve him or he will destroy Edinea and Kitana.

Wow I really like this one. And it is plausible. I really think Kang would fight for the DK if Kitana's life was at stake, also this is a perfect explaination as to why DK has kidnapped Kitana in the first place. Great theory!

Great idea man! I can see that being the reason for his return! He'd do anything for Kitana! Excellent theory!

I also said this in a thread ages ago.
If Kang is back then Shang must have been beaten, therefore releasing Kangs spirit but at the same time releasing Kahns aswell?
Well if Shang was decieved by Quan it would make sense why Baraka is now protecting him then it would be common sense for Shang to be Mileena's master.. so she can go to Decieve Baraka and lead the way open for Shang to get his revenge against Quan.
Then we can also say "ok, so Kangs soul was released from Shang thats why he's back", If too Kahns soul was released then it would make sense as to why Sindel is in the game aswell, no?

There's 3 Deceptions already.

Also thinking about this scenario, I'm wondering has Kang been confirmed as PLAYABLE character or just someone appearing in the game? Because If this Kitana theory were to come about...Maybe Zombie/Spirit Kang is like mini sub boss in the game, because you'd have to go through him because he's being forced to protect the DK, you know kinda like in MKT When you had to go through Goro or Kintaro, then Motaro, and finally Kahn. It could be like Kang, Monster(chimera due to current rumors), and finally the DK. What do you think?

Why would Baraka be helping Quan? I like the idea you though. And we don't know if Kahn is dead for sure or if Shang even took his soul.

I thought Baraka was Quan's protector or have I been stuck in a timewarp?

That would be cool if he turned out to be a boss! you'd have to defeat both forms maybe. Or you'd fight one form depending on you alignment. I don't know if he is confirmed as playable, but he probably will be.

Your right! I forgot all about that! I doubt Mileena would deceive her lover, although it could happen.

Yeah if your alignment is good you fight the Zombie = Evil If your bad, you get the spirit = pure Liu!

Good and Bad eh?
Sounds like Kang's Stage could be that YinYang one we have heard about, the evil and good one that flips accordingly.

wow a decent thread in a madness of newbies.
Okay well Liu is in the game. We know that. So obviously his soul is free from Shang Tsung or messing with him. So Shang Tsung has been defeated in some form or way.
So now we have dark/light liu kang. I do have a feeling he's gonna be more powerful after he learns to balance the dark zombie side with his pure soul. I could go into some religous things on balance but I'll just leave it implied and open to your interpretation.
Pure kang is obviously the good spirit. This could go with either Kung Lao's ending or maybe even Kenshi's.
Zombie Kang, may not be nessarily evil, but it could be soulless and being controlled by someone (Dragon King, Shang Tsung from afar, Richard Nixon from beyond the grave).
Both takes could be to how you percieve DA to finish. Since the story is picking up right after DA, it could be left kinda open to who defeats them, but they make it certain that the Dragon King is the new threat and then he does something to the deadly alliance, continuing the story of whoever you won with from DA.
Man the perks of being MK champ are wierd.

I think that the DK ressurected Liu Kang's body, because Liu Kang was the greatest champion Earthrealm ever had, and an undead Liu would be quite formidable indeed.
The Spirit of Liu Kang left Shang Tsung after he had been killed off, and after realizing what happened to his body, he went to locate Raiden (or Fujin, if Raiden truly is dead.). They allow his spirit to maintain a corporeal form, but he must defeat the DK in order to get his actual life back.
