How come in mk trilogy raidens name was spelled with a "Y", and in mkda its spelled with an "I"?

in the arcade version he is raiden,but when they released the games for home platforms there was allready a game with raiden in the title it was a shooter(cant remember the actual name).they changed the spelling so they could avoid any lawsuits.
