What would you think about MK7 returning to classic 2-D fighting?

I mean, sure pretty much every fighting game out now is trying to take advantage of 3-D and trying to expand on it and take it further. But what if the graphics were really dope and the gameplay was extremely tight, tighter than any MK before.. would you be cool with the idea of the series going back to 2-D, even if it's just for one game? Or do you think they should stick with 3-D now?

Great question..

I would love it if the next installments of MK were in 2D. I mean, sure, the 3D take on the games have been really good, but the gameplay is always a lot more fun when in 2D. That way, they'll be able to add all of the moves they want, and not have to rely on angles and such.

It would also mean they could add a lot more than they can add now, because it won't be 3 Dimentional. Taking up less space.

Think about it.. it'll also mean they'll go back to when the characters were more photo realistic.

I'm impressed with all the 3D stuff, but the 2D gameplay is always on top.

By the time they get to work on MK7, it'll probably be released for next generation consoles, so just imagine how that's gonna look...

While I personally enjoy 2D fighters way more than 3D ones (well, in general), I really like the idea of a new 2D MK. But you know just as well as I do that it's not going to happen, because of the way the american market looks. Young and/or casual gamers these days rarely looks twice at a game that doesn't have lots of bells and whistles, and a 2D MK simply wouldn't sell.
So even if I like 2D fighters, and would like to play a new 2D MK, I think making MK7 a 2D game would be a terrible mistake.

I definately wouldnt want to go back to 2D, especially not now. Theres so much that has been done, and 2D definately cant have awesome things like konquest and death traps, not to mention realsm and interactive envirments. IMO it would be boring to go back to 2D. 3D is just so awesome and the characters look sweet.

Plus, with PS3, Xbox2, and GC2 coming along, MK7 will probably be in for those new systems, and i couldnt imagine how awesome things would look, and new, not to mention better gameplay and improvements. I like the juggling and combo system way better than the 2D system.

No that wouldnt be good but the photo realistic

That would be a step DOWN on the evolutionary scale of gaming and technology.

Though I would love it, it wouldn't be a wise move from a commercial stand-point.

I would only condone a return to 2D if it was one of those VS games. (Capcom VS Midway in 2D)

As much as I love 2d fighters and I think 3d is way overrated its just not good for today's market where gamers expect games in 3d nowadays. I personally dont have a problem with 2d games, I actually prefer them in some cases.

Mk should stay 3d. Going back to 2d would be a step backwards. Although, a combo of 2d and 3d could possibly work well, but I would prefer MK to stay in 3d. MK has evolved with the step up to 3d and it should continue to do so.

It is a common misconception that 3-D means "less space" and 2-D means "more content". In fact, game devlopers and programmers are rarely limited by memory issues these days. In fact, it is more like that a 2-D game would have less content, simply because character sprites have to be drawn, redrawn, animated, and syncronized without the help of rendering tools as is common with 3-D games. This is more time consuming, and can even take up more memory on a game disc (think, one second's worth of animation in a 2-D game can take up to 24 different character sprites, whereas in 3-D games it is simply one polygonal model that has physical motion). As such, we should not limit our programmers by the dimensions they work in!

I have an idea...how about we don't talk about MK7 until its actually in the making. Think about it, Boon and co are busting their asses to get MKD out and people are already putting stress on them for the next MK. And plus this is the MK:Deception discussion forum so it shouldn't be posted here. Maybe in the general discussion??? I'm not trying to be a dick or anything but I feel their is no reason to discuss MK7 at this point.

Good point. But I meant that being in 3D, that takes up more space.. not less.

My Idea for Mortal Kombat 7 is this: Have the Dragon King or whoever win this entire tournament and conquer the realms and rule for generations. Then have mk7 be totally fresh, a new set of warriors who fight to take back the realm that used to be theirs. Have the only familiar face be the Dragon Kings and everyone else new. I think it would take the series in an excellent new direction. This would also allow them to use their creativity and come up with 24 or so new and fighters that would have to be as cool or cooler then the previous MK fighters and they could go nuts with new storylines. just my .2 cents.

smaddy - Sounds great, but if they had any new characters that were at all similar to classic characters, the fans would absolutely go insane and call it the worst game ever. tongue

I think MK should stay as 3-D; there is more to do with it (it wouldn't look right picking up weapons in 2-D and the fatalities u have to admit are better in 3-D)

What they need is another MK Mythologies in 2-D (make a series using different fighters - I don't consider MK Special Forces as one). I'd like 2 see:
1. Kitana (maybe how Edenia fell to begin with -
include Jerod in it)
2. Raiden (learn more abt. the gods of MK)
3. Ermac (how he became to be with the souls)
4. Scorpion (would just balance the Sub Zero game)
5. Original Kung Lao (how he died)
