In the opening and endings he was. Sort of. Fatality.

Yeah, I guess the opening FMV and endings don't really count. Then you could say Goro and Liu Kang were also included.

I think it's going in sort of a spiral..
MKDA had basic characters, (MK1 + some MK2, etc), and with 1 fatal, the tournament story is back...reminded me of MK1
MKD has more characfters from future games (Baraka, mileena, Sindel, Nightwolf, Tanya...) New fatalities, more dynamic gameplay, MORE stage interaction (in DA there where the Buddahs , the mooving of the hip, and the columns Moloch could break...), darker look... Reminds me of MK2, with a little touch from MK3...
MK7... Hmmpphhh... a little of MK3+MK4??

How can Liu Kang not count? No matter how different he will be, he is still Liu Kang.

Rayden, Scorpion and Liu Kang are by far the only Mk1 characters.

Goro is/should be dead for good since his murder back in MKDA and the destruction of his body in lava.

Sub-Zero dead.

Sonya might be on earth dealing with a great evil that is starting to cause panic and might help to open the doors for the great king to arrive.

Johnny Cage is hopefully: alive and not doing another movie.

Kano he must had been killed by Mavado, or is alive and has something personal with Kira.

Reptile we still don’t know.

Shang Tsung .I think we have not seen the last of him.

Of all of those, my guess is that only Sonya, Reptile and Tsung have a slim chance to return.

You gotta give to the staying power of the Lin Kuei. At least one Sub-Zero has been in every MK game save for Special Forces.
