It's hard to do. He seems to me a bit of a joke character, akin to Janitor Ned in Mace: The Dark Age.
What I want to see in him:
More than comic relief, a man who is extremely fit and agile, cocky but not retarded--in short a man who is capable despite his headstrong airs. His styles should be really diverse--showy, not really any style a mixture of attacks from many styles, especially Muay Thai (he did wear kickboxing shorts in MK1).

I always taken Johnny Cage seriously, although I did see the movie before I saw his game counterpart.

I just think of him as a martial arts actor. Would people take Bruce Lee, Jet Li or Jackie Chan seriously? I would.

Johnny Cage is one of earth's greatest warriors, chosen to represent his world in battle. I think that says enough.

Thats how we should see him, but his storyline and the whole movie thing makes him out to be a bit of a joke. His MK4/Gold ending didn't help!

That's my point, TWG. If he's in MKD, I hope they 'darken him up' a bit--give a bigger dose of reality. He seems fairly mindless, maybe there should be some pathos--movie flops, MC Hammer lifestyle, something to prove, some vendetta, etc. If not he's a Mokap-quality fighter.

They'll have to try pretty hard to do it without wiping out all trace of his previous stories. Cage just needs to seem more real. He just seems one-dimensional.
