I kind of gave up Mortal Kombat years ago...well video games in general. I have been an MK fan since the very first installment, up until MK 3. I jumped back on the Fanwagon when MK4 came out, along with the MortalKombat:Conquest TV series. MK Deadly Alliances definitely sparked my attaention, but after DA and Deception, I really lost interest in MK, and videogames in general. I think I'm way too old (25) to be playing fighting games or even be interested in them, but MK vs DA has sparked my attention. I don't why or who came up with the idea of merging a dark serious fighting game with a light atmosphered childish super hero comic book franchise, but when I first heard of it, I thought for sure it was some joke--not even a good april fools joke??? When I found out it was actually true
I was kind of shocked to know that proffessional, mature game designers would actually put together a concoction that a little kid may have thought of.
I really don't know what to say for the MK franchise. I may sound rather synical here, but I think this is a nail in the coffin of the MK franchise, as far as it being taken seriously--at least for me it is. I think it lost it's serious atmosphere between MK3 and MK4. After that to me it just took on a cartoonish atmosphere, and crosses the line of plain sillyness. This is where they lost me. I'm not into cartoons or sillyness. I must say this is a very weird concoction they have mixed up. Mortal Kombat and DC comics are of two very different genres. It's like mixing Pokimon in with Resident Evil... I will say though that I am impressed with the graphics. The simple fact that this is Mortal Kombat with some spectacular graphics (which have often failed in previousMK games) is enough to get my attention, but as far as the concept, I am disappointed with the merging of these two franchises, and the overall FIGHTING SYSTEM. I would expect that in this modern age of fighting game franchises that MK would take on a more complex fighting engine--that of the likes of Virtua Fighter, Dead Or Alive, Tekken, DOA, etc...not that MK is that similar to these games, but for a mature audience I think MK as lagging far behind in the area of Gameplay/fighting engine. Overall, I would expect this game to be aimed towards the age group of 9-16 y/o. Seriously, not to insult anyone's intellegence, but the fighting system has not changed that much since I was around those ages.
I don't own a videogame console, but I think I will want to play this game just off of intrigue. I'm not dissing this game or the franchise, because like I said, this is MK, and I've been a long time MK fan. But, I would much rather have seen a MORTAL KOMBAT vs KILLER INSTINCTS--would have made MUCH more sense and been a little more intriguing, darker and maturer...or a DC UNIVERSE vs MARVEL, with this new engine, fighting system and graphics! Ironically, this engine much more fits the comic book franchise rather than a Martial arts/Sci Fi fighting game such as Mortal Kombat. They did say that the next/THIS MK game would take on a much more serious and darker approach. To me, they've actually taken a huge step backwards as far as concept is concerned. The graphics are more serious, yes. I also pleased to see that they have FINALLY cut down on the BLOOD and made it more REALISTIC--to me this is one of the biggest and best steps the franchise has taken in making it more "serious." To me, they have not been as serious since MK2.
Overall, I look forward to playing the next MK installment for a moment of mindless fun, though it will not hold my attention for long, I look forward to the next Mortal Kombat.

So, in short, you didn't like Armageddon...
