I believe Raiden immediately before the blast allowed Quan and Shang to hold on to him so that they all teleport to safety. But the irony is, all 3 characters lost a great deal of their power in that one event.

Raiden sacrificed a greater portion of his powers to create the ethereal blast. Quan Chi somehow dropped (probably from the blast) the amulet and Shang Tsung lost his soulnado. All 3 characters are weaker than ever, making them even more desperate and more in need of each other.

I think each of them is gonna pull a few favors for the other to get their way. Quan Chi wants his amulet back so he'll help Raiden, Shang wants something so he helps Raiden and both essentially owe their life to Raiden and have no choice but to side with him otherwise they'll be facing TOO many enemies at one time (earth warriors, DK and possibly Shao Kahn).

I think this is a very clever move on the part of Midway. Excellent way to develop the story and the characters. This also explains why none of these 3 characters are officially in the MKD tournament, they are all probably super unlockables and in hiding, plotting and regaining their strength.

Quan Chi is alive! SO YAY! :D

Thanks. :)

This is also a very good of way allowing a character to sit out a game or two without killing them.

I'm also happy that the way Midway decided to bring back Liu Kang (even if it is just a game after he died) in a clever and plausible way. However, I highly doubt Liu Kang will play a big role in this game. Gone is the time when Liu Kang gobbled up all the spotlight.

Seeing the intro cinematic over and over makes me wonder what the fight with Shao Kahn and the DA looked like. It must've been some cool shit.
Desperation Alliance? confused

Don't worry, there's no such thing, it's just something folks here came up with due to what happens in the intro video.

Shujinko says: "And so it was, a new alliance was formed out of desperation, sworn enemies joined forces to combat a greater threat."

And I'm now completely with Daemos in the theory that they all survived, because it looks like Raiden teleported all three of them, because:
-Raiden is white (Could be from the ethereal blast though)
-Quan Chi is turning around and appears to jump toward Raiden
-Shang Tsung disappears just before the blast goes off.

Aah! I didn't see the trailer/intro, this is clearer now.

Shujinko says: "And so it was, a new alliance was formed out of desperation, sworn enemies joined forces to combat a greater threat."

That's right, but nowhere does it say or does he refer to it as "The Desperation Alliance", it's just a made up name by people here.

For example, if a plane crashes on a snowy, hostile country, and the people in the plane befriend or join the locals living there due to hunger and cold, does that make it the "Hunger & Cold Alliance"?

People just saw the video, heard Shujinko's words and came up with an assumed name.
