Few remember, but back when MK4 was initially released...before they extended his ending to show him putting on Shao Kahn's helmet....it was vaguely hinted here and there that Reiko was going to share some sort of connection or relationship with Sareena.

This was backed up by a few things:
- Both members of the Brotherhood of Shadow. (Sareena has the mark tattooed on her shoulders and Reiko wore it on his back)
- Slight resemblence between the two (the black tattooes on their faces look similar and they both have black & white hair)
- The events of MK4 followed up on the events of Mythologies (Shinnok's Amulet...in Mythologies we learned Quan Chi actually killed Scorpion's family and it was addressed in MK4...and so on)

In Mythologies, we were introduced to Sareena who was seemingly "killed" which left those who played the game and cared hanging. And it seemed...at first....that Reiko was going to provide the follow-up or closure on Sareena.
But this never happened. First we got his ending where he just walked into a portal and disappeared. Then they expanded the ending by having him put on Shao Kahn's mask for no apparent reason....which of cource led to the headache-inducing Reiko/Kahn controversy.
Reiko's ties to Kahn overshadowed whatever potential tie he may have had to Sareena and it seemed as though that little storyline was scrapped.

I always hoped that if/when Reiko came back, they'd bring back that connection and forget his Kahn connections...unfortunately in Armageddon they went full speed ahead with Reiko being a Kahn-wannabe.
Disappointing, but not unexpected.

However, there was something that struck me when you encounter Reiko in Armageddon's Konquest which brings me to the point of this thread...
In Konquest they establish that Reiko really hates Quan Chi for some unknown reason and that he'd love to see him dead.

Why?

Could it have something to do with Sareena, who was Quan Chi's slave and also hates him? Might there actually be something more to Reiko than mini-Kahn? Has his potential connection to Sareena not been completely forgotten?

If so...then what is Reiko's tie to Sareena? Related? Lovers? Stalker? What could be the repercussions of this relationship as far as Reiko serving Kahn and Sareena siding with Sub-Zero?

Now I'll be the first to admit this is probably just wishful thinking on my part. I'm very much aware that storyline was all but nonexistent in Armageddon and Reiko's hatred for Quan Chi might not mean anything significant and just be yet another bit of randomness they threw in for a chuckle.

Just food for thought...

Pray that you might be fractually correct with that predicament.

Wow good point with that connection. I've never thought of a connection between Serenna and Reiko.

Maybe there is a connection between him and Sareena. Their appearences have too many similarities for it to just be coincidental. Perhaps Reiko's obsession to become Outworld's emperor has a direct tie to Sareena? If he's in power by eventually defeating Kahn, he can take out his personal vendetta on Quan Chi. And in honesty, it wouldn't surprise me if Reiko and Sareena were lovers at one point, or at least close commrades.

Yeah, I agree. Reiko of all people could use the tie as he's pratically related to no one except for Kahn (and that Quan Chi mention). Anything could have happened with him and Sareena. Perhaps he may have been a former member of the Brotherhood of Shadow. That's probbaly unlikely though, but could explain the hatred towards Quan Chi.

Lol

But yeah, I hope that you are right. As tg said, Reiko of all characters needs a better storyline and hopefully they will take this direction as it seems practical and interesting. Like XD84 said, it is probably wishful thinking, but would be awesome if it happened.

I like this idea, it's a damn sight better than deciding to turn Reiko into a Shao Kahn cheerleader. If Reiko ever comes back (and I'm honestly not too fussed either way, but still), I hope they go further with this angle, and his hatred for Quan Chi.

But since Sareena now seems to be shacked up with Sub Zero's Lin Quei, where would that leave Reiko? Would it lead to rivalry with Sub Zero, or would it make him turn his back on evil. In Konquest, he came across as far more honourable than a typical Kahn goon.

There are other things to notice, Reiko was at first going to be Noob Saibot, but Noob was later put as a secret char. So, they were making him to look like Sareena, way to tie him to MK:Mythologies and tell everyone he was the original Sub-Zero, which they decided to do a lot later and just hitting the fact with his fatality.
This left Reiko having the same appereance as Noob would've had if they wanted to show he was the first Sub Zero and wearing a costume that looked like Sub Zero in MK3. Notice how Sub had a mark on his eye and wore similar hair.
So, unlike a lot of other characters(like Hsu Hsao), both Noob and Reiko have had a lot of potential to their stories. Noob's has been touched very well and much more than Reiko, which is a shame.
Lots of things could happen, Reiko being a relative(to look alike could mean they are brothers) of Sareena. He could have a grudge with Noob because Noob was the former leader of the Brotherhood, which Reiko must'Ve become. Reiko actually trying to kill Shao Khan to take his place. Getting a rivalry against Sub Zero to regain Sareena on his ranks. I could go on for hours.

Lets hope that the bios which are supposedly going to be released for MKA shed some light on the subject.

I never really thought much about what you're saying XiahouDun during Konquest, tho it does make some sense.

To be honest, I pretty much presumed Reiko disliked Quan Chi because he seems pretty loyal to Kahn (hes almost a mini-Kahn like you said), and Quan Chi (with the aid of Shang Tsung) attempted to assassinate Kahn during MKDA. Then why doesnt he hate Shang Tsung too? Well, perhaps he does, but never mentioned Shang Tsung because Taven didnt know about him and was looking for Quan Chi. (At least, I cant remember Shang Tsung being mentioned. I only played Konquest once).
Also, Reiko served as a general in Shinnoks army. Maybe their hatred stems from that, or that Quan Chi was Shinnoks right hand man during the events of MK4. maybe Reiko was jealous etc.

So perhaps his hatred comes from these things, rather than anything Sareena-related, tho that does make sense also, it just wasnt really the first thing I personally thought of, especially now that they seem to have taken Sareena off on a different direction.

I have always wanted a connection between Reiko and Sareena though, and I do hope there is one.

In my own fan fiction MK7 (which I never really got to finish putting up on MKO), I had them as lovers during Sareena's first life (ie before she died and went to the netherrealm- meaning she didnt really originate there she went there for being a naughty girl lol), and also that they worked together as assassins/hitmen/mercenaries. Sareena was killed on a mission, and Reiko blamed himself for Sareena's death, making him a recluse.

I think something like that would be a good connection. but thats just me lol.

I've just been presuming that

1) The physical similarities between Reiko and Sareena are due to them both being members of the Brotherhood of the Shadow. Those tattoos and white hair streaks are probably something that all members who aren't just all-black like Noob have. Remember, Kia and Jataaka had facial tattoos, too, as does Chi himself. (Curiously, Ashrah does not...the character artists probably just forgot or didn't know at the time that she was an ex-Quan Chi Assassin.)

and

2) Reiko hates Quan Chi because Chi having the amulet is partially responsible for Shinnok losing in MK4. Whether he's pissed about that because he still harbors some loyalty towards Shinnok, he's mad that Chi put him temporarily out of a job, or he just doesn't trust the pasty bastard in general, I couldn't say.

I can't really fathom what connection they'd have anyway. If we go by the information the games give us, here's what I've gathered:

Reiko was a living Outworlder, Kahn's General hundreds of years ago, before Goro, Kintaro, Motaro, and Kano all held the spot. He presumably died and became a wraith like Noob (their eyes both glow that exclusive blue color), and his experience as a general made him perfect to lead Shinnok's Army of Darkness. After MK4, he's free from Hell after bailing at an opportune time during or just after Shinnok's defeat (at least, that's how I interpret the whole mysterious walking through a portal thing), and ends up working for Kahn again, once the emperor finally comes out of hiding and reveals that the Deadly Alliance didn't really kill him.

From the dialogue he's been given in Armageddon, we know that he's an extremely fair-tempered, disciplined warrior who takes his duty very seriously, and his only ambition in life is to one day succeed Kahn as Emperor of Outworld. Frankly, I don't see the man having time for thoughts of women and romance.

Sareena was born a demon in Hell and it used to be Quan Chi's magic that made her look human, but recently it's her own ability to feed on the life of a realm, perhaps making her a succubus or something. The only interest in "romance" she's ever hinted was for Pre-Noob Sub-Zero, because of his ability to defy her hated master, Quan Chi. I can't see her going for a guy whose entire life is faithfully serving that same evil and others like it.

I think Reiko was either created by Shinnok or Shang Tsung to overthrow Shao Kahn.

No. Reiko was merely meant to be a replacement for Noob Saibot as they wanted to introduce as many new characters as possible. I think the plan to make Noob Saibot and the Older Sub-Zero the same person came later on. Reiko's face tattoo is of an Outworld influence.

Considering that Reiko is from Outworld and has been around for a very long time, I really doubt that.

Regarding the whole Reiko/Sareena thing, yeah, it's more likely wishful thinking, but that would be cool to have. Reiko needs a lot for his story as he's become Kahn Jr. His story needs lots of expansion.

I just took it as Reiko was a member of the Brotherhood of Shadow who later came to hate Quan Chi, as did Sareena and Ashrah.
