There needs to be another tournament-oriented MK game.

When you think about it, there hasn't been one since MKII. 3 and 4 were wars, and I can't think of any way to describe MK:DA other than 'a bunch of really important stuff that happened'. I'm aware that Quan and Shang did hold a tournament (the one Li Mei took part in, also possibly Mavado vs. Kano), but the events of DA, strictly speaking, were not really affiliated with it.

I'd really like to see the next official Mortal Kombat tournament. It's back in the rightful hands of the Shaolin Monks, right? Although for once the story wouldn't revolve around someone trying to take over earth, there could be a couple of Outworld denizens trying to win that first out of ten...

I know what you mean. I too would like the Tournament feel back. I mean don't get me wrong the stories are good, but Mortal Kombat is Supposed to be an offical Tournament. I think it should go back to those roots. Good thead!

What I was thinking was an MK 'prequel' of sorts. The stuff we know all about, but never got to see.

Characters like:

The Great Kung Lao - 'Nuff Said.

Sub-Zero (earlier) - if the Subbie we all know and love is a 6th generation version, why not get a glimpse of where it all started? One of the first!

Raiden - You know he was always around...

Morihei - Perhaps my time-sense is off, but it would be great to see him, or one of the very early Black Dragon/Red Dragon clan members.

Some member of the Shirai Ryu - I'm REALLY curious. Just what kind of pack did Scorpion come from?

Really, there's a buttload of possibilities for early MK characers. Add in that Tournament feel, and we could have yet another winner here...

The tournament is held every generation, meaning the next tournament will be held like 60 years from now, people. heh. And the champion becomes immortal, so no Liu Kang won't die or get old.

MK is actually the Elder Gods way of seeing if one realm can conquer another, but other than that it's actually just a tournament to fight in, a tournament for glory, for honor, when no one is trying to conquer something else.

Sorry, people, but unless they want to fast forward a couple of years, there is no excuse for having another tournament-based game. Still it would be nice to have one.

Oh, and before you come saying to me, "if a tournament is held every generation, how do you explain MK2?" MK2 was a trap for the Earth Warriors and later became a cover-up for Sindel's ressurection. It was not an actual Mortal Kombat tournament. And the only reason the Earth warriors went into Outworld for it was because of revenge and because friends wanted to help out friends.

MK2 was a tournament by all means, but it wasn't a MORTAL KOMBAT tournament, if you get my drift.

Yes, this is a good thread, I had thought this too. MK3 actually worked with not having the tournament format - the game had that dark feel, after the occupation of the Earth, even Raiden's message at the begining has a negative tone. But by MK4 the novelty of the new, no tournament format began -IMO - to wear off. MKDA was great, but the tournament story is part of what made me like MK, like they say - it's not a war but a simple contest between the best fighters of each realm, defending their own world in a tournament.

I liked the old tournament idea, but ten straight victories seemed too much for me. They should change the rules and have the fighters compete for a prize or glory instead of world domination.

I know I said 60, but how long is a generation? That was only my estimation.

A generation seems to be 50 yrs in MK.

500 years ago was when the great Kung Lao was defeated by Goro. It was the 10th tournament when Liu Kang won. Therefore it must equal 50 yrs?!?

I'd like to see the tournament theme back too. Maybe in MK7 the Dragon King, or some new villain should hold like Shao Kahn did in MK2, but taking place in Earth, Outworld, and wherever else certain fighters may come from. There'd be more fighters with their own agendas, rather than the "This big group versus that big group" thing in games after MK2.

I TOTALLY agree! I think the 'essence' of Mortal Kombat is in a mortal tournament. Lets get rid of silly cross-breed-inhuman characters and have a tournament of Mortals. So many possibilities, The Great Kung-Lao, Liu-Kang, Maybe all the ninjas ( sub-zero, scorpian, reptile ) as human each representing their clan. The best fighters from across the world fighting to be the best. -- wow.

you have to remember that the mk2-6 are the events after the 10th tournament. everything was going to plan until tsung lost (against all odds) and shao kahn was pissed about it, stepping in with his own rules. he tried to conquer by the elder god rules and he wasnt gonna wait another 500 years so he set up a winner take all touney (mk2).
oopse! screwed that as well, so time to take earth by force! (mk3)
then he got beaten whiched paved the way for another to rise up and take the mantle of 'dark lord of the sith!' er ...ruler of outworld. and it seemed that these would be rulers (shinnok and the DA) thought that the elder gods would do nuthin based off their ZERO attempts to thwart kahn so it was all good havin a crack at world domination.

the only way we are gonna see a tournament again is if boon decides to do a prequel or after the dragon king saga winds up they fast forward 40 or so years to the 11th tournament.

Well, it's been what, 10 years since the events of MK:1? They seriously could fast forward 40 or so. We could have an old Sub-Zero (who could still kick ass), Scorpion, being already dead, could show up, pretty much anyone from Outworld or Edenia, being ageless and all, and new generation warriors, like the son of Sonya and Cage, or something... >_>

Oh come on, you KNOW she wants him.

It doesn't have to be one of the "once a generation" official MK tournaments. MK2 wasn't, that was Shao Kahn luring Earth's fighters to Outworld, to fight against his in a tournament, most likely to eliminate competition for his Earth invasion via Sindel's ressurection during MK3.

NO.

You see, the Tournament has been corrupted and there is a story now.

If they go back to Mk1, then it wont have the "danger" feeling anymore:

Mk1 was awesome, we knew it was a true Tournamnet with rules to fallow.

Mk2 was better, they started to cheat and cuase danger, but there were still rules.

Mk3 was amazing and better! Finally a terrible war, no rules, no nothing.

Mk4 was not as good as Mk3 but it was good. No rules, no nothing.

MKDA had the oriental feeling back, but there were no rules in this battle for domination.

You see, if they go back to the rules stuff and all, it will loose the "danger feeling" it has now.

I disagree. One can still have that feeling of suspense, even in a standard tournament. Besides, midway can pull any manner of rabbit out of their ass, find some new loophole of the gods. There wouldn't be an MK3 without just such a thing.

There could be some mysterious item or relic with godlike importance placed upon it, based on earth, and the baddies could be entering the tournament not only for their homeland, but to acquire this. perhaps, some sort of trinket that alters reality, or gives one the power to move back and forth through time. There could be plenty of suspense with something like that.
