I am interested what forumgoers are thinking about this game.

My own opinion: it was not bad game, but it was way behind its time, used outdated fighting system with some useless gimmicks added to justify use of 3D engine. The only thing that was unquestionably good about this game are Fatalities.

I liked it.

I liked the fast gameplay, various game-modes (tournament and team modes was great), the way they did the endings and I liked all the new characters except Jarek.

Biggest disappointment was Shinnok being a boss with no unique moves and being selectable like any other regular character.

Fighting Goro was fun, loved his grab (it did something like 40% damage lol).

I would say it is a good game. The problem was it was a good game that couldn't keep up with the rest of the competition in a different market.

I liked the graphics, the roster was ok, it played like UMK3. I liked the damage cap. The side step was kind of cool, but a little broken, and weapons and stage interaction was fun.

Compared to other fighters at the time it couldn't hold up. It wasn't true 3D, and it was trying to be somewhat 3D, and it just didn't work right. It was trying to be something it wasn't.

I liked MK4. Gameplay is fast and the Fatalities are good. I really like the drumbeat heard during the Fatalities. Increases the cool factor. I don't like the fact Shinnok was very easy, I have more trouble with Goro than him.

MK4 has something all other MK games don't, and that is FMV Cutscene endings! So bonus points for that.

It was a good game. My favorite one in the series next to MK9.

My only issue was the items that could be picked up. (Really? People just hurl boulders at each other?)

Loved the endings, ecspecially Jarek's. (I'm so gayyyyyyyy)

Gameplay was fun, fast paced and the fatalities were amazing.

I really liked the story and overall tone of the game.

in terms of console games, MK4 was released in a transitional period for both MK and the games industry as a whole, it had 3D graphics and a completely new style controller. Players where given something very different to the MK they where used too.
As a standalone game, it is well balanced and fun to play for anyone who can get used to it, and that is the issue, the style of controls had not been used in mk before and they haven't since, making them unfamiliar to the fans which is why it is an acquired taste that requires learning a whole new skill-set. in this regard it is probably best suited to the hardcore fans.

I think i speak on behalf of the community when i say that i play it once in a blue moon and enjoy it but the control scheme never instinctively comes back to me like riding a bike.

Sure MK4/Gold was a great game. Played it a week or two agin on the Dreamcast emulator and after a hour and a half I was surprised to still be playing it. The grathics were great for the time, it was very bloody, the fatalities were great and it had good gameplay. Gameplay wise remember it was in the difficult period of gaming were it was passing from the old to the new as in 3D. It was a new toy to play with, but developers had no instruction manuel and had to figure it out for themselfs.
I also liked how MK4 was a return to a more serious gorey game, doing away with Friendships, Animalitie's and Babalities (heavens know why they decided to inculde Babalities in MK9). MK4 was a 3D remake of MK1. That's why you have only Fatalities and Pits. That's also why you have Goro as a sub boss and a easy end boss Shinnok who can copy peoples move like Shang Tsung, but without the shape shifting. MK9N also has the best Pit Fatality of all the. The Fan one.
I was unhappy that they did away with individual combos. The main beef people have with the game are the bone breaker throws, which is amusing. In MK9, Baraka's X-ray involves him putting his blade through his opponants eye, brain and back of the head and the oppanant gets back up for more when he should be instantly killed by such a action, but you can't have a throw that involves breaking a arm, leg or two.
Overall now MK4 gets 4/10, but back in the day when it was released I would give it an 8.5/10.

I loved the game. It was fun, looked great, had an awesome soundtrack, the best fatalities of any game, and cut scene endings. Fuck portraits, seriously.
