I'm a member of GameFaqs.com's MKD forum, and someone asked us what features we'd like to see in the next MK game. I listed mine, and was told that I had some great ideas, and then heard that occasionally, the design team itself checks this place out for information and fan feedback.
So, while I'm sorry if this has been done countless times before, I'd like to see everyone post their ideas for special features and new evolutions in the future of MK here. You never know what may come of it.
Here are some ideas I've toyed around with:
1) Weapon specific Fatalities that essentially are shorter-to-input versions of Brutalities that ruthlessly dismember, slash, and crush the enemy. The only real thing this offers over a normal Fatality is bragging rights, but they could be visual dynamite, as well as being fun to do for those willing to learn and practice them.
2) More unique fatalities. I'd like to see an entire crew devoted to NOTHING but concepts for new Fatalities, and if I were on it, I'd try to bring back a pinch of the old-school shock value. No more "comical" fatalities. I'm sorry, but Bo Rai Cho's new flaming gas Fatality is an insult to serious players.
3) I would like it if before a fight, you could pick from a list of available fighting styles for your character, since there are certainly some we prefer over others. Remember a character you wanted to use in MKDA, but hated the pre-determined styles for? I do.
4) Video endings would GREATLY increase the fun in the single player mode, in my opinion.
5) Vicious counters and throw counters. Not stealing the DOA engine, by any means, but the throw/counter system in that was truly fun. I'd like to see a slightly less broken system implemented in MK7.
6) More minigames. One I'd like to see is a kart racing game. Sure, it's like stealing Mario Kart, but why not, if you've already jacked Tetris and Super Puzzle Fighter? :P
Think of the special abilities: Scorpion harpoons his enemy ahead of him, and retracts the harpoon quickly, lifting the winning cart high and literally flinging them several cars back as he pulls ahead to where they were. Sub-Zero freezing the enemy's kart and either leaving them dead in their tracks or ramming them to pieces. Baraka casually reaching over and puncturing a tire with his blade, so that for the next ten seconds, your handling is totally shot and you have to fight hard to keep control of your game.
I think that has a LOT of promise if done right and put totally online with up to, say, eight players. I REALLY hope Midway considers this idea, as I think it would dwarf the fun-factor in both Puzzle Kombat and Chess Kombat on its own, and I'm VERY much looking forward to PK and CK.
7) I would embrace a less rigid fighting system not dependant on dial-a-button combo memorization. These things don't trouble me, but they are a bit outdated, and most people I know simply can't commit a fourteen hit combo to memory, much less actually do it.
A LOT of high/low hit variation in combos would add entirely new levels of strategic value to your attacks. I mean, in real life, would you ONLY swing at the face of a man attacking you? Nobody has trouble just holding block. Now, watching for the sudden low attack around the fourth hit of that combo, on the other hand...
8) One more thing I'd like to see in MK is a tag-team function where it required two people on each team. You'd need to each have total mastery of a character to switch on the fly and split combos with each other, similar to what Noob-Smoke does, only with any two characters of your choice.
Or even if Midway limited it to preset team options, but left you about 15 or so teams to choose from, that would be excellent. That way, there'd be a possibility of two-person Fatalities.
An idea of what I mean is:
Baraka/Mileena
Baraka could stand in front of the victim, extend his blades, and swipe one through the enemy's stomach, splitting them horizontally, almost all the way through. Then, he'd bring one down into the top of their head, exiting through the crotch, a vertical split. BUT, before they even have time to fall apart, he steps aside, and Mileena does her trademark "through the floor" drop kick, hitting them in the face, knocking their torso off of their waist, and splitting THAT in two, vertically, as it hits the ground, leaving an intact waistline and legs to collapse, twitching.
9) Finally, I would absolutely love it if Midway should open a site up specifically for fan mail in regards to our ideas and criticism for future MK games. I think we as fans know what we want, and for them to devote a lot of time to reading our opinions, considering the impact of giving them some life, and then applying themselves to making our ideas a reality, that would not only impress me, but make me feel a lot more like MK was "my game".
Just some thoughts. Sorry about the fact that I can't type a short post, but I hate being halfway thorough in my descriptions. If only I could ANIMATE any of this...

I agree, those ideas are great. It would be very interesting to see what type of ride each character would drive in a Kombat Kart type game.
*pictures Sub-Zero riding on top of a refrigerator on wheels*
No offence, but i don't like them at all.
Especialy the Cart idea. If that's gonna be the future of new Mk games Boon can kiss his oldschool fans goodbye. I don't care a bit about the mini games it's al about the core fighting game. And when they leave them out, there would be space on the disk for fmv endings. Conserning the brutalities, i don't give a shit either. The game is fine with only fatalities. But let's make them more hardcore, more detailed and try to bring the shock effect back into them. With the power of the next generation consoles this must be easely to achieve. With Mk deception they are on the righ course. With highly interactive arena's, deathtraps, and multi tiered arena's.
I think if they evolve all of this into the next generation mk games, there will be enough mk's in the future for us to look forward to.
Peace out!

The Midway feedback/ideas site is a good idea.
I also like the Kombat Kart idea, but please only one minigame next time.
Spend the staff budget on a bigger fmv team, next gen consoles should bring the two closer together anyway (fmv and realtime graphics).
Properly research the martial arts.
Charcaters' animations must be more natural.Characters should not only do techniques from martial art styles they should also move around the arena in the manner of those styles.

Sorry, but I think this is a topic that should be kept going for a little while.

The old finishers from Mk3. All of them. Now before you start saying "they were shite! No way!" hear me out. Noone forced you to use these features and many people enjoyed them. I didn't really like the friendships or babalities but the others were nice.
More unique finishers.
Better costumes.
Design a fighter would be nice. were you mke a fighter like in the Sims or something.
Old favourites back.
Old stages back.
Graphics don't really need much improvement. Mortal Kombat is always one of the best graphical games.

I would say some create a char feature, it's new and not really a feature of any fighters (discluding sports oriantated ones).

What if we were able to switch between.. say.. 2 or 3 different camera views?? And have one of them be a first-person view!!!!
1. Classic View
2. Overhead View
3. First-Person View
And if you're in Versus Mode, the person who switches the camera is able to see his/her character in the first-person.. unless the other person switches it again.
It might sound a bit stupid, but I like the idea of having that ''other battle'' going on during a fight besides the actual fighting.
And of course, the ''Camera Toggle'' could be disabled in the ''options'' menu if you so desire.

I definitely like the feedback idea, especially considering how many fans feel a connection to the MK series (heck, I grew up on it). Plus, everyone has ideas. You'd think the MK team, who have gone through several games, would welcome a page devoted to fan ideas. Who knows.
As for the future of MK:
1) An MK RPG. Note, this would be a separate game of course, all by itself.
2) If I were making MK7, I would focus on two things: The fighting and the story. Those are the two main reasons why people play MK. Not for puzzle fighter and not for blinking lights.
The story should have full motion videos intros for each character. I mean, hell, Twisted Metal Black had FMV intros for each character and that was first generation PS2 title! I want to know more about each character. What their past is if they're new, what brought them to the tournament or into the main story, or even a sub story. Who do they have a vendetta against and why, what happened? I'm not asking for a mini movie for each character, but I'd like to see these characters come alive on the screen. I'd like to see scores settled not just in endings, and I'd like to see a little more innovation in the storytelling. The plots are starting to sound too familiar: "that character's being watched" "that character is loyal...or IS HE??" "Having returned from near death..." and many other lines seem to appear way too often.
The fighting needs to be more natural and organic. Focus on what made the old MK games great. Get back to basics. Also, like someone else said, make the fighting styles authentic. Too many moves seem to fall into too many fighting styles. Other than uppercuts and roundhouses, I'd like to see some greater variety in character moves.
Oh, and the last but most important part: Stop stealing from yourselves! Quit giving new characters old moves, old stances, old win poses, old fatalities etc etc. It takes something new and sucks all of the originality out of it. I'm not just complaining here, I really think this advice would make for a better game.

I agree with you 100%. Well, MK RPG, Konquest is pretty much an RPG but if they added another type of "Konquest" in MK7, it'd be cool if it was with someone evil. I get exactly what you mean by the same story lines. I mean, I had the strategy guide to MK Trilogy back in the day, and every single bio, said "He/She seeks revenge against Shao Kahn", and every SINGLE ending said that they killed Shao Kahn. It's like how many times can Shao Kahn die? About the moves, definitely. I'm trying to find a way to contact Boon about this personally, to let him know that it annoys me, and other people obviously, when characters have the same exact moves from people in the past. I don't mind if it's a slight variation, like with Kung Lao's kick from MK:DA and Hotaru's kick in MK:D, but when it's the same thing, like Darrius' kick that he stole from Cyrax (MK:DA), is just pathetic. It ruins the fun of using a special move when it's something you've seen already. I for one, like seeing new and cool special moves, new and cool fatalities, and brutal combos. They said they toned the combos done, but I hope it's not only one combo per style or something, cuz I use combos a lot. But when it's the exact same shit someone else had, where's the fun in that?

Deathtraps were a good addition to MK, they add for "real-time" death. I think with the next MK, deathtraps should be revealed in the 2nd round IMO (doors opening, cages lifting etc.) and also they should put in classic button combinations to intentionally use a pit for the finale.
Obviously if MK7 is going to be on next generation hardware, we can assume the character models/animation will be highly upgraded. I would like to see a damage system (cuts anywhere, clothes torn etc.) and ragdoll effects for given power moves and even taking strikes. This would allow for a different way of interaction all the time. When someone blows up, they fly apart different each time, parts bouncing off walls realistically.
More moves, more ways to string fighting styles back and forth between each other - this is a given! More walls and areas to bust into, generally more interaction. Take away the 3 breakers because that sucks IMO. They shoulda' made it block and a movement F or DF or UF to parry on time with an attack.
Keep the classic levels and music coming!
Bring back 2D bridge levels!!
