if you want them both connected at the same time(your computer and xbox(ps2) you will need a router, or wireless router. I don't believe there is much of a price difference.

My PC is way at one end of the house, my Xbox is on the other... I just bought a 100ft ethernet cable that I connect to my modem, then run it across the house to my Xbox. works great. No router is neccesary unless you want to be the on the console and PC at the same time. Can't wait for the chance to get my butt kicked by you guys here on the online play real soon..!

No you cant.
You need a wireless Router and an Ethernet Bridge. Another option is to get a NYKO wireless net extender.(which I did)You can't be on the PC and your PS2 at the same time(does that really matter anyway???)but it is much cheaper and easyer then a Router and E-Bridge. Check it out here. http://www.nyko.com/nyko/products/?i=14

I have a similar setup to the original poster. My broadband is delivered through a cable modem I have set up in the main room. This is connected to my TV and PS2/GCN. My computer is set up in the front room and I have a hefty ethernet cable trailing through my house between my cable box and PC.
Luckily I think if I can get a much shorter length of ethernet cable I can keep this permanently attached to my PS2 and exchange the wires at the cable box (like I already do when switching between my PS2 and GCN) depending on which I want to use.
I think this would also work for the thread starter.
Peace!

I had the smame problem you all had. I have my Xbox in my room and the router is downstairs, and I have a wireless reciever in my room. The onyl 2 ways you can get ti is to have a wire running from one to the next, or a wireless adapter. I got another wireless adapter. It cost me about 70$. They range from 50-70$. They cn be a bitch to set up, but in the long run, it is completely worth it. I hope I helped you out in some way.

You mean you PC monitor right?? If so then no.
The NYKO w.n.e. works like this. One of the units plugs diretctly to your modem(one Ethernet cable goes from the Modem to the unit, and one goes from the unit to the PC.) The other unit plugs to your PS2 Net work adapter(or Xbox).
