A more specific (and slightly less deranged) explanation of widget in the computing sense would be a third-party web applet that performs some sort of function, not necessarily involving clocks. You can get RSS widgets for news updates, stock widgets, hit counter widgets,etc... In the case of Noob.com, it's just a countdown clock they didn't write themselves...
Widget, as far as I know, is a word that has no specific definition.
Before the world of computer tools it was a general term for machinery or devices. It is spelt with a D, and interestingly enough, is not included in my moldy old sixth edition student dictionary.
