hmmm direct sound is to do with direct X if i remember right, try re-installing whatever uptodate version you have, that should fix the problem, either that or your soundcards driver is screwed so try re-insatlling that.

Sounds like your sound card driver configurations have been messed up or it may have been jarred loose. You should go into your control panel and click on sounds and audio devices, then click the hardware tab and see if the sound card type is displayed, if not, it may be lose. I would take the case off and re-seat the card. Then go back into audio and sound devices and see if it's displayed then. Good luck, and hope I helped.

You can reinstall DirectX with windows update (the latest version is available from Microsoft). But first I would find out what sound card you have, the make and model number. You can do this by the methods described in the above thread. Then uninstall your sound driver (also an option under hardware profiles in My Computer>properties>device manager). Then do a Google search fro "Your sound card and model number" drivers. Somewhere should have your driver. Execute it, reinstall it, then restart your computer and update to the latest version of directX. That should work. If u need further help, personal message me and I'll give you my AIM screen name.
