Teaser.
So, AHS is my absolute favorite show on the air right now (two words - Jessica Lange <3), and I was wondering how other fans of the show felt about Lady Gaga being in Hotel.
I'm also a big Gaga fan (PRE-Artpop), but tbh, this scares me quite a bit. I've seen Machete Kills, and her acting isn't terrible, but it's definitely not amazing.
Considering the mind-blowing talent the show currently has/had -
Kathy Bates
Jessica Lange
Angela Bassett
Zachary Quinto
Sarah Paulson
Lily Rabe
Evan Peters
Frances Conroy
And many others. I mean, you've got Oscar and Academy Award winners all up in this bitch, and I just see Gaga as totally out of her fucking league. She may surprise me, because with all this talent, it might up her game. But my intuition says differently.
With Jessica leaving the show this season, I see this as nothing more than a ploy by producers (and Gaga herself) to keep viewers and ratings because of her massive fan base. Her musical career has also been on heavy decline, hence her willingness to participate.
ALL shows eventually do, so I'm just worried that this will be season where it starts going downhill. I haven't seen Freakshow yet (so please refrain from using spoilers), but I already know I'll love that season, because -
1. Carnivale is my absolute favorite show of ALL TIME - and a friend who has seen Freakshow has already confirmed multiple influences from Carnivale.
2. My sister and I have literally the same taste in movies and tv shows, and she's already seen it and is in love.
Asylum is my favorite season so far (LOVE that dark, gritty realism), with Coven following in second. And the producers have stated that Freakshow is not as dark as Asylum, but is darker than Coven.
Anywho, back to Season 5: Hotel. I'm curious on how receptive other fans have been to the decision of allowing Gaga a leading role over all these fantastic acting veterans.
Thoughts?

Freakshow was a bit weak in my opinion so it was a let down for me. As far as Gaga goes she might be able to act or she might not be featured that long in the series (similar to Adam Levine's character in Asylum). Thanks for the info though, I was wondering what the next premise would be.

All sources claim "leading role".
That might not mean a mainstay in the entire series, but in this particular season her influence/presence will be strong. I've also heard rumors of heavy musical material in this season. Which I'm willing to buy considering it's from the same creators of Glee.
Anyway, no problem.
Despite that she needs AHS more than it needs her, I'll still eventually tune in once it comes out on DVD/Blu-Ray. Same reason for Freakshow, I don't get FX so tuning in weekly is out the door. -.-

Oh I don't think she's absolutely terrible or the worst imaginable. I just don't think she's going to perform on the same level as the mainstay cast. Kathy Bates' talent alone will be enough to carry her along, but acting is something I've personally always been superbly picky about. I'm familiar with the ins and outs of acting, studied it for five years. So I just worry that she'll prove to be more of a distraction than she will an asset.
But like I said, I'll still tune in with hope, but it won't be much. I'll gladly be prepared to eat crow because I'd LOVE to be wrong about this "downhill" theory.
Also, Finn said in an interview that he'd love to return for the next season so it's a definite possibility!

Can they just stop the fucking Glee shit? That really kinda turned me off from Freak Show. The best season so far has to be the first. Coven coming in second. Asylum in third with Freak Show last for me. Only good thing about Freak Show was Twisty.
My favorite thing about the show is the recurring cast playing different roles. It keeps things fresh. Now with Jessica leaving, I can see a lot of people not watching anymore. She was the heart of the show in a lot of ways.
Now on this Gaga business. I can't stand her. Her acting isn't what bothers me, it's her in general. Can't stand her music and since she's on there, I have to assume there's going to be more Glee shit. Already not feeling this season.
But if the Hotel premise is good I'll watch. Is it a haunted Hotel or is there a murderer there or what? Hotel is way too vague.

And it's been said she's definitely going to have a cameo, so that cushions the blow....a little.

With our luck, Gaga is the hotel manager who lures people to their death with musical numbers.
But in all seriousness, I'm not exactly sure. I can't imagine it being too much longer before they start releasing stills and such during production. According to my social media source, a lot of people are already expressing their dismay about this season. So I'm sure they'll give us something more to gnaw on very soon.
Also, in my EW issue a few months back, the creators stated that ALL the seasons are, in fact, connected in one way or another. And it will be completely revealed in due time. One instance is that Madison Montgomery's last name coincides with the last name of the original owners of Murder House in the first season. And doesn't Pepper show up in Freakshow? Basing that off of hearsay and the fact that Naomi Grossman was at many of the Red Carpet events, so I'm not 100% sure.
Freakshow takes place in what, the 50's, right? Asylum is mainly 1964, so there's another possible timeline connection.
That's another interesting tidbit that might keep me watching to find out what these "connections" are.

Not to get on a musical tangent but what's wrong with that album? My girlfriend is the one who got me into LG and Applause, Sex Dreams and Gypsy are jams.
As far as AHS goes, loved first 2 seasons, Coven was a little weak but Stevie Nicks saved it for me (huge Mac fan here) and Freakshow was really uneven after the first 4/5 episodes for me. Hopefully, Hotel does the trick and I think Gaga will be good in it, seems right up her alley.

It's unbelievably weak (including sales) compared to The Fame, and Born This Way. The best tracks imo are Venus, Artpop, and maaaaybbe MANiCURE. I say that one only because of the music. The lyrics were bleh. Applause was okay, and not to bash your preferences, but, Sexxx Dreams was flat out terrible and Gypsy was completely forgettable, lol.
Although, nothing takes the cake for awful like Jewels N' Drugs. It's almost as if she completely lost her substance. This was the first album where I legitimately did not like ALL of the tracks. Just by that fact of being hit and miss - it was totally underwhelming. As a musician myself, I know we can't write #1 hits ALL the time, and I don't hate the album, but this was just totally disappointing when compared to her previous work. She took a gamble...and lost.
And holy dick balls...muh FLEET! <3 They really did them justice in that season. Her acting made me cringe, but I easily overlooked that just with sheer fanboyism, lol. The season finale, where Myrtle chooses to be burned at the stake again (CUE: Silver Springs!) Oh...my...sweet...Jesus. Not gonna lie, I cried. v.v
"Delia....my sweet daughter. I've never been more proud."
Powerful stuff man. Brad has an amazing talent for writing juicy female roles.

No kidding. I'll continue to be butthurt about this, even until the end of the series. She's had a phenomenal career though. So many pivotal pieces.

Might I just say you have incredibly good taste, my friend.
Just to boast, I actually got to meet her when she was doing the rounds for her documentary a few years back. She's a tiny little Goddess in human form. LOL Wasn't really surprised when she showed up in Coven as during the Q&A she wouldn't shut up about how amazing American Horror Story & Game of Thrones were.
Back on topic, what do you guys think of the story rumors? I read that the show will revolve around the Garden of Allah Hotel in LA, it's another period piece in the 40s/50s and will feature ghosts again. Of course, that's just pure speculation at this rate but for what its worth, that specific hotel was mentioned twice during Freakshow by Denis O'Hare and Jessica Lange's characters.

Why, thank you!
I'm so jelly!! That woman is a musical and lyrical genius. Bahaha, I could totally see that, because in the Special Features of Coven, she's there talking about how "The character Misty comes in and faints, which looked so real, and Jessica steps over her towards me and I'm like I'M IN IT!"
First I'm hearing of this. Verrry intriguing. They love to play on legitimate historical figures and places. The Black Dahlia, Anne Frank, Marie Laveau, ect. ect. So it could very well be. I also have a soft spot for period pieces so that actually gives me more hope for the season. Thanks for the info!
I liked Coven the best too since it was the most coherent story. Half the time AHS can't decide if it wants to be an anthology show like Tales From the Crypt or a true serial episodic show with an overarching main plot and sub plots that pay off as the series unfolds. My personal ranking:
Season 3: Coven
Season 2: Asylum
Season 1: Original
Season 4: Freakshow
Season 3: Coven
Season 2: Asylum
Season 1: Original
Season 4: Freakshow

Is season 4 worth watching? I liked the first three seasons and enjoyed them all, but I watched the first episode of season 4 and honestly I struggled to make it the end.
-_- I've got to get to General Discussions more often...
I've been on board with AHS since the very beginning. Freakshow was a definite dip, in my opinion; quite underwhelming overall, with moments, especially toward the end, that betrayed a writing staff that didn't quite know where to go after squeezing in an ostensibly cool but ultimately halfway-thought-out scene or character... but I won't bring you down any more than that (who knows, you might end up loving it!)
Season 1 takes the cake, I would say; it was genuinely chilling and off-putting (and I'm not a dude that gets creeped out easily), all held together by engaging drama, a story for which one couldn't help but deeply crave a happy resolution. Because of this, a disappointing ending was aggravated into a make-a-vein-pop-out-of-your-forehead finale, but it was forgivable given the ride that led up to it.
Asylum was more so disturbing than creepy, which is a branch of horror that I also appreciate even if I don't admire it as much. Sarah Paulson sold the shit out of that long-suffering character. The acting overall was strong across the board, surpassing the skillful cast of the first season. And the ending wasn't bad at all, which was refreshing!
Coven was enjoyable, if a little too humorous and light. But you get deplorable ball-drops like a Frankenstein Frat-Boy making faces for ten episodes, and Bibbidi Bobbidi Deus Ex Machina reviving everyone who dies... shit gets weak. I did, however, thoroughly enjoy Kathy Bates as Lalaurie, and her ongoing feud with Angela Basset. Talk about the kind of actresses you wanna offer a standing ovation to after every line. They made that season.
I won't say anything about Freakshow, as per your wish, m'sire.
NOW, onto the actual topic of your thread...

My face when...
I wasn't expecting that shit at all. I think you hit the nail on the head: it's a marketing ploy on both sides, and not a very subtle one. That being said, I think that, at least for such a purpose, it will work out masterfully. The sheer novelty of tuning in to see Lady Gaga getting the shit scared out of her is enough to make me wanna watch. People are going to watch that, they are going to talk about it, tweet it, bleat it, Pinterest it, Photoshop it or... whatever you kids do these days...
I am very hopeful that, all that shamelessness aside, she ends up surprising everyone with her acting chops. That would be ideal. However, I have not seen her act in anything, and that makes me wary. There once was a time when I lay my full trust in the writing staff of AHS, a time somewhat forgotten within ruins of senseless plot devices and music-and-dance numbers -________-' (those hurt...) My fear, having heard the news of Gaga leading the cast, is that her inclusion will end up alienating the rest of the cast, and then we lose all the good ones for good, not just Jessica Lange! You're right, she's gonna be up against (with, technically, but the right word is against) some top-notch actors, and that reaction could prove to be relieving OR catastrophic.
I'm also not instantly sold on the Hotel theme. I was hoping they'd be a little bolder with their setting this time around.

Great breakdown!
Basically, I agree on all accounts. MAN, Sarah Paulson stole the show in Asylum. I'll even venture to say more so than Jessica. She went through a few choice struggles that I can personally relate to, so that may be a factor. But she was still absolutely spot on. Asylum's musical number was easily the most appropriate. All of the characters (the ones you cared about anyway), were being consistently shit on ALL through that season. So it was definitely refreshing having "The Name Game" in episode 10 to lift your spirits. Not only that, but I thought Jessica did a great job with it.
Yeah, Coven is my second favorite thus far, but partly because I enjoyed the premise of a witch coven more so than a haunted murder house. And you hit it the nail right on the head - Kathy Bates addition along with Angela Bassett and their continuous conflicts...absolutely golden. Coven was the most plot-holed imo, but because of those two, as well as Stevie Nicks, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
They even admitted in the special features that the writers didn't know who the Supreme would be until right before shooting for the final episode began. I'm glad it ended up being Cordelia though, because everyone, even Brad himself, loves an underdog. I was thinking it would either land on Zoe or Queenie (although I fucking LOVED YOU NAN ;_; -- "Put out that cigarette. Now stick it in your vagina." Omfg, how can you beat that?! Jamie Brewer is amazing. <3), but overall Cordelia was a great choice. Being constantly suppressed by Fiona, as well as sending you in all different directions with her powers. Lose 'em, gain 'em, lose 'em again. Woah now.
You know, thinking about it now, probably not too fair that I requested folks not to speak about Freakshow considering there are spoiler tags, lol. *facepalm*
But alas, already spoiled on one bit...apparently Twisty dies. (Looking at you, fuzzdork -.-)
Also wondering if I should just edit this thread into "All Things AHS" or something. Because I thoroughly enjoy discussing all aspects of this show, and the Hotel idea itself is still kind of meh. Btw, LMAO at that reaction to Gaga meme. So true, so true.
As long as it doesn't become the Gaga show, I don't care.
I love AHS, it's the only show I go out of my way to watch these days.
Sucks that Jessica Lange has left, she made each season IMO.
I love Evan Peters and Francis Conroy so hopefully they remain in the show as well as Taissa Farmiga.
My fave seasons from best to least fave; 1, 2, 4, 3.

Ditto.
Frances is LOVE. Ruth Fisher anyone? She also appears in another one of my favorite shows - United States of Tara (Season 3). She's got a mean Christmas obsession, and is just flat out hilarious to watch.
How did people feel about Papa Legba (Lance Reddick) in Coven? I thought Lance did an amazing job and your eyes were instantly drawn to him. Legba and Queenie shared one of my favorite scenes from the season. There wasn't much going on, but the dialogue and Lance's dialect is what sold me...as simple as it is (trying to throw in some of that dialect) -
Queenie - "What the hell? You're Papa Legba. You live in a Chicken Shack?"
Papa Legba - "Nooo dawlin'. It's not THE hell. It's YOUR hell."
And that deep ass laugh man. *chills*

I Bish-Whetted when that first happened as well; but yes, goddammit if it wasn't refreshing and weirdly appropriate. They made it work, which was a feat in itself. Where else would such a startlingly sudden departure in imagery, tone, dialogue, EVERYTHING work so well?
The second time, I had had a few brewskis, so I might have danced along and improvised a "LEO!!!" part.

Ugh, it bothers me when writers leave major plot decisions to the moment they're facing a brick wall, with the penultimate episode playing right behind them. George Lucas admitted to doing that with Star Wars -_-' It's just asking for problems. They wrapped it up well enough for such irresponsibility in Coven; Cordelia was a good choice, although the fact that we didn't see it coming too obviously attested to their lack of planning: nothing really LED to it, it was nonsensical, even if pleasantly surprising.
Fucking Nan lol I laughed everytime she said "I'm gonna be Supreme!". No, Nan. No, you're not.
AND SINCE WE'RE SPOILING SHIT I GUESS, you're gonna see her again in Freakshow

You're a fucking racist!
I actually really liked Papa Legba, but again, here comes lazy writing interfering with a good thing. Their idea of "hell" really pissed me off. It's fucking HELL, people, can't we get creative? You gonna stick Queenie in a chicken shack, serving strips? Really? That's hell? Come on, Lance Reddick, let's go. I'm casting you in something with respectable lines.

And I, alas, don't vividly remember a lot from the other seasons, so discussion might be lacking, unlike when I just finish one
I do remember and would like to state however, that I sorely miss the cast members from Murder House, and was very sad when so many of them didn't come back to me.
Connie Britton, you were so enjoyable to watch. Made me feel ultra-sorry for you; just wanted to reach out and comfort you so many times. Also, you look like an older Fergie.
Kate Mara, you're so oddly hot. You got even better after you were tragically killed. You can bring a razor to the bedroom anytime!
I even miss you, Dylan McDermot, with your bare ass filling up my TV screen five minutes into any given episode. T'is a very nice ass, though, I must say.

Nothing to that extreme, thank god. Orientation, my friend. But overall, ALL of my fears, senses, and interests in the genre were touched on in Asylum, and I think that may also contribute to why it's my favorite season so far. Aliens, Nazis, Religion, Possession, the Asylum itself, The...."Cure", Serial Killers, Rape, Whores. You name it, Asylum had it.

Lol, I LOVED how Lana started getting into it and dancing but her entire facial expression during the beginning just screamed "Ummm...Idk WTF I'm doing, but I'm okay with this." Speaking of tone and mood, James Cromwell (Dr. Arthur Arden) was an EXCELLENT addition to the cast that season. The man's a Redwood, and that very stature really helped set the tone and mood of that season. He's so tall that he looms and hovers over all the other characters, which sets a very...intimidating atmosphere. Plus, you had that classic power struggle in the work setting between him and Jessica Lange's character. Which is always fun to watch.

! I won't say when or how, but I am gonna say I did enjoy her character; brief but surprising and fun.

Agree on all accounts. I was disappointed to hear them say so, although, like you said, Cordelia being the Supreme obviously "attested to their lack of planning".
Truth be told, as soon as Fiona and Marie killed her in that damn bathtub, my emotions went haywire. I was like, okay, if BOTH of you bitches don't die by the end of this season, I'll officially boycott Coven. Up until that point, I was fully behind both of them but after that, was forced to figure out where else, or who else rather, I wanted to give my faith and devotion to.
Well, here's what I know about Freakshow -
50's setting, Jessica Lange's character is German, I knew Jamie Brewer would appear sooner or later because, just like Naomi Grossman (Pepper), I saw her on the Red Carpet events during it's promotion, Sister Mary Eunice from Asylum makes a cameo, Kathy Bates is the bearded lady, aaaand Twisty dies. That about sums up my knowledge. I know a lot of folks on here said Freakshow overall was weak, but I'm going to FULLY indulge it regardless, basically because I know it's the last I'm getting of Jessica Lange. Also, I've always had a soft spot for Circuses, Carnivals, and such.

I want to like this show, but it's all build up and no real payoff. I've been disappointing with every season's endings thus far.
