These things don't even shock me anymore. Here's the predictable sequence of events that follow any shooting:
-3-ring Media Circus. At least they named the right person as the shooter this time (as far as we know). The name of the shooter will be forever etched in our minds, but the names of the victims forgotten.
-Another lengthy, drawn-out debate about gun control that never resolves anything.
-Republicans will blame Democrats; Democrats will blame Republicans, nothing will be done.
-Things that have nothing to do with the shooting will be blamed- violent video games, heavy metal, etc.
-A debate about mental illness and mental health care that doesn't actually change the system to provide for people who need it most. Mental illness will continue to be stigmatized so people are even less likely to get the help they need.
-The shooter gets so much press that others will be inspired to do the same, but also feels the need to up the ante and make his/her crime even more shocking.
And thus, the cycle begins again.

And on the eve of GTA5's release. Such a coincidence. I'm starting to think some of these things are a government conspiracy. Seems like a lot of them fall on or around something controversial and semi-related to the topic of gun control.

Let's not think about how this will affect us. I think the best we can do is keep spreading as much good as possible so we can move toward a society that will no longer produce people like this. Even if that's an impossible goal, it's worth striving for.

*sigh* Way to ruin our sensationalizing and pessimism!
But in all seriousness, Tony is right. I think this will be a little bit different due to the fact that the shooter is ex-navy reservist, so perhaps there will be more consideration in evaluating his motives and reasonings behind the atrocity he committed.

I've been watching this on n off all day. Last I heard, there were 13 dead, including the (a?) gunman.
I'm sure someone will eventually comment about "So there's another shooting in America. Why is everyone so shocked when several car bombs go off in Iraq almost every day." Or something to that effect.
I wanted to start a topic about Colorado's massive flooding, but I'm not sure what I could say/do to help the situation any. Or the New Jersey boardwalk inferno. 10 alarm fire? I thought it only went up to 5.

My uncle happens to be out. He headed out they not to long ago (maybe about a month or so) for cancer treatment for his wife.

Him being in the Navy has nothing to do with what he did. He's been fighting mental disorders for a while, and has been known to have outrageous rage issues. He shot a gun up at his ceiling in an apartment complex and got evicted, also shot all four tires of someone's car because he had an argument with the guy.
It's literally another mental disorder issue story.

Original post took the words right out of my mouth. Basically, I think the same stuff that happens with every other American mass-murder will take place, with nothing changing to the current policies for weapons. It is tragic, but I'm sure more coverage will be given to how GTA 5 inspired the event because it came out today, and not because the shooter had issues.

I'm glad to see everyone isn't as cynical as I am! Your post was beautifully and simply put. A little kindness can go a long way.
Dave Cullen wrote an interesting op-ed piece on the media's role in mass shootings. He states, "Mass shootings are performances, and when they shine the spotlight on the shooter, they make him a star." You can read his article here: http://www.buzzfeed.com/davecullen.
I would have to agree. Why not turn the media focus on to the heroes of the shooting? I think if it's one thing the media did right during that school shooting in Georgia that almost happened, they focused on that woman who talked the would-be shooter down rather than the shooter himself.

Why can't everyone just be friends :(

I just don't see what can drive a person to do this. The fact that someone hates their life that much is quite alarming to say the least. Its just simply going to keep happening. Best thing I can suggest is a mental evaluation/ check up on suicidal/ crazy history for gun purchases.

It seems this guy had quite a mental illness. Apparently there was an incident where he had had his ceiling, as well shooting his neighbor's tires. How he was allowed to keep his weapons after these incidents is beyond me though? Its not like the weapons where registered if he was in the service. They should have been confiscated sooner.

It is also well documented that he heard voices in his head. Basically, the guy was already mentally unstable and instead of getting help for it, he finally snapped. Considering that, as well as the aforementioned issues, he should've never been allowed to keep any weapons, regardless of his being in the service.
Has anyone ever heard the pro-gun argument of "the best way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with one"? I think this is a perfect example of how silly the argument is.
