For some of us, soundtracks can make or break a game. It sets the mood, can invoke strong emotions, and sometimes bring us to tears if the entry of a song is played correctly. So, my question is- to you which video games or video game series have the best soundtrack?

Here's my list-


Honorable Mention - Red Dead Redemption

Red Dead's soundtrack was superb; from the first piano keys in Exodus in America to the final guitar twang after dealing with Edgar Ross, it was excellent. However, the honorable mention -for me- is earned by one song and one moment, and those of you who have played it probably know what I'm talking about: the entry into Mexico was a work of Art.

3rd Place- Resident Evil 1, 2, 3, REmake

Though the music wasn't a heavy feature and was often eclipsed by the loudest footsteps in video game history, at times it totally made the game or at least the situation you were in. The ambiance of the save room and the fear felt when the music tempo kicked up is something you never forget.

Runner Up - Mass Effect

Mass Effect is an excellent example of getting music right in both cut scenes and combat. From the second I heard Vigil at the beginning of ME 1 to the second Vigil ended with the stargazers in ME 3, I was in love with this video game's soundtrack. It is so well performed and fits so well, it's utterly spectacular. So many feels listening to it guys, soo many feels.

Ok, finally, my #1


1- Metal Gear Solid

Hideo Kojima is some sort of evil madman. To craft a story as complex, beautiful, and heart-wrenching as the MGS saga and couple it with some of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard come from a video game is a feat of unimaginable brilliance. While the series definitely has a set of default ambiance music like any video game has, it's rarely ever repetitive (unless you're stuck in a particular area for an extended period of time). The distinction, however, between the ambiance music and the major themes is so great that the punch that the story delivers is doubled by the songs that back it. Even Peace Walker and Portable Ops which were released on PSP keep the trend of having absolutely spectacular scores. These are songs that will stay with me forever and have actually worked into school work because I love them so, so much; the Metal Gear Solid franchise, for me, is just spectacularly scored.

I've left our Rising simply because I haven't got around to playing it
