I got the idea for this thread after reading a closed thread (that I don't agree with, but I digress...)

Have you ever encountered any bootleg games? What game? Where did you get it? How did you know it was not a legit copy?

A many years back I purchased Pokemon Leaf Green for the Gameboy Advance off of eBay, and played it happily. A few years after that, I found the cartridge stashed somewhere, and decided to delete my file and play through it again. This time, I noticed whenever I would walk up to a wall (specifically in a Pokemon Center is when I noticed it), the very right side of the screen would have a white bar going along it. I shrugged it off as, "Boy, Gameboy Advance games sure were lower quality than the games we get today."

Coincidentally, later that day I Stumbleupon'd this video of some doofus who has no idea what he's talking about, but it sparked my interest about bootleg games, and I started looking up the signs of a fake GBA game.

Long story short, my copy was a bootleg!

What's your experience?

The thread wasn't "Bootleg video games", it was "is my game a bootleg?". There's a difference, especially when there are so many Pokemon threads already.

I haven't had any experiences with bootlegs. If I purchase another Pokemon game (I need a copy of R/S/E) I'll be sure to do it in person though, as it seems really common to get ripped off with those games.

I personally ordered Fire Red and Leaf Green from Amazon and have had no problems, but then again you're right about the risk of getting swindled.

I remember back in the day my uncle gave me a bootleg copy of Quake III Arena for the Dreamcast. It was funny, because it was never a game I wanted, I didn't know how easy it was to pirate DC games, and I only played it a few times. The game worked fine, though.

I'be played PLENTY of bootleg games. Back in the late 90's, all PS1 games in my country were bootleg. In fact, at ANY store where you bought a PS1 they would install the chip for it to read bootleg games. Even legit stores.
I dont think Sony oficially sold a single game back then...

It was same in Scotland. Everyone had ps1 chipped, I always remember the store that sold bootleg games. It look like normal computer store on outside and inside. The police would always raid the place on weekend so you couldn't buy any games on those days but could make order pick it up in weekday. When police would raid the place they always looking bootleg games CD but not once did they click on that games were on PC and guy would burn it there and then. So they always find blank CDS but because store was computer shop (they did fix computers and sold pc stuff), the police couldn't do anything. The shop still there but they stop doing bootlegs because PS2 and xbox killed that side of business. Chipped PS2 and xbox could easily break so they had to get repair alot so guys in store stop doing bootleg and are now focus on computer repairs and wrestling stuff

I've only ever seen one fake game. It was one of the Pokemons and the game played exactly like the real versions for the GBA, except the berries would never grow.

My friend has that Pokemon game with swearing in it.

I think he bought it when he was a kid on Holiday off the looky looky men.

i've played several bootleg games but the 1 i remember most was a copy of roller coaster tycoon for pc my friend had. the bootleg copy was weird it had some weird glitches and such like if you dropped people in the ocean they did not die they just walked along the water onto the path. or try to make the coaster crash by shortning the track and speeding up the mph made the game crash every time.

My original Super Smash Bros. N64 game was a bootleg.
Figured that out when I looked closely at Mario and Link on Saffron City, by their models.
