SP2 finally came up on m automatic updates today... so I started to download and install it onto my laptop (what I'm on now) and the family computer. Fam comp finished first, and everything worked out fine for that. Once I finished installing it onto my laptop, however... once it restarted, the comp wouldn't go to the desktop (it would stay on one of the loading screens) It didn't freeze, because I could move my mouse around, but there wasn't anything I can do on that screen. So I started my comp... and got into safe mode and went back to a previous restore point. I had this same problem before when I tried to install sp2 when it wasn't released to the public. I figured the problem would have been fixed by now, but I guess i's just my laptop.

Has this happend to anyone else? Does microsoft know about it? Can I try something else? Or is there a different type of sp2 made for laptops??? I doubt there would be, but just wish I could update to sp2 without any probs. Thanks in advance.

well i downloaded it for my desktop computer and for me the only problem was that when i restarted it,it wouldnt let me get online. And this problem was cause of the new firewall it came with for me cause i was using eztrust firewall and now it wont even let me use that at all so i have to use the windows xp one.But for the problem your having i honestly dunno. My guess now for you if you cant get back into windows is to reinstall everything and then if you want to take the risk try reinstalling sp2 right after.

I've downloaded it and haven't had any problems w/it yet. It did freeze for a little while cause I had McAfee firewall installed. I uninstalled that and now it works fine.

I had the same proble, but it was with my family's Desktop PC. After I downloaded SP2 I was asked to reboot my PC, then when it went to reboot it crashed on the Windows XP logo screen then rebooted, and kept doing the same thing over and over again, and I couldn't get it out of this loop. My PC (New Sony Vaio) is no more than 2 months old, I didn't know what to do so I called tech support becuase I couldn't figure how to get into the bios, and system setting to get it into safe mode, also Sony ships the restore disk preloaded on the HD which after 45 min on tech suport they relized I couldn't access the HD though the settings to restore my PC to a restore point. They said my only 2 option where to either send them my HD to let them fix it and to try and recover any files or completely restore the PC and loose everything. Since it was only 2 months old I decided to just reset the thing, but a HUGE FUCKING pain in my ass since I lost all of my personal files.

I wouldn't download it, i would wait untill reviews are released that say it's ok to use, this is my opinion as previous Service packs have never gone well in their first release, if you really want to download it then uninstall your firewall if you have one installed and use XP's one, crap i know but it's the only way as SP2 doesn't like 3rd party firewalls i hope this changes as i prefer the one i'm using at the moment.
