College Advisers
You know, I might be generalizing here but I would have thought in the beginning that Community college advisers would be less knowledgeable and helpful than University advisers. Crap was I ever wrong.
I'm currently attending Tarrant County College in Fort Worth, Texas and will be transferring to UT of Arlington in the spring.
So I going back and forth to both schools trying to get everything straightened out. I go to UTA to talk to them about scholarships. I go up to the clerk to ask her about any scholarships that might be availible for Psychology students. This is what I got
Me: Hello do you have any information about general or department scholarships, or can you tell me anything about them or the process of getting them.
Her: Umm.....well....I don't know
Me: What do you mean you don't know
Her: I just don't know
Me: You work in the financial aid office!
Her: I know sir, but I can't help you
After I ask to speak to someone who has a higher IQ she goes on to tell me to use the computerized data base that I have never touched to look up scholarships. Crap! "I don't know" What the hell is that! And people wonder why college students stress out, because the freakin people who work there thats why! Dang at least TCC tried to fake it, this woman flat out said "I'm stupid go look somewhere else"
I consider myself somewhat of an intelligent person, but when I don't have a clue about something I'll admit it and seek help. And what was this woman doing there if she wasn't knowledgeable of her own department?
Moral of the story: If you are beginning college or are in highschool and looking to go to college Talk to other students before going to advisers. Whether its community college or a university they all get paid too much for knowing too little.

Logan, I definately understand your frustration being a former college student myself. However, I also used to be employed full time by the admissions office at a large University here in the Chicago area.
Presently, I don't work there, but at the time I knew everything about the courses, classrooms, professors, labs, semester dates, facilities, tuition, the entire enrollment process, etc, etc... And I was generally not allowed to give any of this information to anyone because we had representatives to meet with prospective and current students.
This is most likely the same situation with your financial aid office. If there was a department at my former school that people seriously hated dealing with, it was the FA office.
Personally, I think the answer that clerk gave you was quite dense, but it was most likely just an attitude coming from that person.
Just bear with it man, welcome to college. You'll get a lot of crap like that. Good luck!
...Oh, and do talk to your advisors. They're paid and trained to get you the information you need.

Believe me, you're not the only one to have to deal with that. I only talk to the advisors when the college forces me to. I've found that my friends and instructors and family can help me much more than advisors can.
The last time I went in to speak with one of them, the man told me that I "absolutely must" take the entire business ethics sequence in order to fulfill my major requirement, and I'm an environmental science major! I asked him why, and he told me he didn't know why, but he knew I had to. So I checked my prerequisite list and asked like ten people around campus, and they all told me I didn't have to take it.

Yeah, all I do is ask students now, I almost didn't get in college because of dumbass advisors.
you know I thought this thread would get more attention than this. I wonder how many on here go to college?
Anyway, I don't want to sound like an ass, I know people are people and people will not always know everything, but I think its dumb to not be knowledgeable enough in your occupation to where you can't help people.
Even if they don't know how to help me thats fine to me, but I think its at least curteous to refer me to someone who can help me.
