Again, for people who either haven't watched Dexter yet but plan to, or aren't finished watching the whole show, I suggest you stay out of this thread if you want to avoid spoilers. You've been warned.

Is it me, or was Dexter's ending kind of a compromise? I imagine a character like Dexter is very polarizing for the audience, therefore making it easy to displease half of the audience. Dexter getting caught, or dying, or even just being on the run, would all risk pissing off a part of the audience, as each of those outcomes would be irreversible. So with Dexter still alive, the ending is, well, open-ended, as each of those outcomes are still possible.

Still, they had to make the final episode impactful, and they did by killing off Debra, and by giving Quinn and Angel Batista a small glimpse of Dexter's homicidal nature. The former certainly worked, and it's just saddening to watch the final scene and know that Debra is gone, forever, even though it's his fault she died as he litterally pulled the plug on her, though if she was never going to come out of her coma anyway, then Dexter might have been justified in what he did. Still, I admit I feel sorry for Quinn, given the emotional turmoil that the dissapearance of Debra's body must have caused him.

But in the end (heh), the ending wasn't much of an ending. I'm certainly not going to atomathically believe that Dexter will spend the rest of his life alone, as after all, he could still be alive in say, thirty years. He could be tempted to reunite with Hannah and Harrison in all that time, and track them down. Speaking of those two, talk about a loose end. Hannah's past could come back to bite her, she could easily kill again, and Harrison could pay for her actions.

Anyone here who watched the show in it's entirety, how did you feel about the ending?

It was trash. I can't even discuss the final season without getting riled up. I sincerely thought that the second-last season was incredibly well done (not the best, mind you, but for the corner they had written themselves into, they managed to weasel out of it pretty well without over plot-dropping, which happens a lot on Dexter), and then the last season came along and ruined that.

I feel like I shouldn't need to say there will be spoilers in my post since the thread title has that covered, but... Spoilers.

I'm of the belief that the negative reception of the finale (and to a lesser extent, the final season as a whole) is a bit of an over reaction as it often is for shows like Dexter. It was certainly far from a perfect finale, but none of it felt particularly wrong. Debra's death was one of many sensible outcomes... The darker one, of course, but it still worked from a storytelling perspective, I think. When they say their goodbyes, it is Debra letting go of her over-dependence on Dexter cold-turkey... Her immediate failure and subsequent death unfortunately show that whether we like it or not, she wasn't ready for him to leave her. Also, IF Debra had to die, I would have wanted Dexter to be the one to do it. The moment he pulled the plug on her was sweet, if still incredibly sad. I also (and I know this one bothered some people) appreciated that he took her body and dumped it in the ocean. Not everyone cares for symbolism, but as Debra had earlier symbolically cut her ties to Dexter by wrapping up the case on her own (then failing), Dexter symbolically cuts his ties from Debra by disposing of his (potentially) final kill. Her death is the proof from both perspectives that neither of them were able to live without the other.

The one thing about the ending (and the whole last season) I do take issue with is the Harrison/Hannah thing. I liked Hannah a lot last season, and I was happy to see her return... But... In the time between seasons she became a battered housewife? *sigh* ... They altered her personality greatly and made her rather weak, honestly. That would have been acceptable IF they had developed her motherly side more. She and Harrison needed to develop a real relationship over the last season to make the ending more believable. Otherwise it comes across as really careless of Dexter and suddenly Hannah is saddled with someone else's kid.
