Do you like your games to be challenging?
I personally enjoy difficult games. The harder the better. Easiness annoys me a great deal. But I know a lot of people would disagree. So I want to know how many people here enjoy challenges in their games.
One argument against difficult games I've frequently heard people make is that they just want to have fun, which a game (or characters, weapons, etc) with a very high learning curve doesn't provide. That one finds that entertaining is one thing, but to me, many of these people act like anyone who plays challenging games do that just to appear elite. Whether that is true or not, in my case, it really is because I enjoy them.
I love spectacular wins. I love having to make an effort. In games where more than one character/vehicle/etc is selectable, the more interesting choices tend to be the hardest to master. Zangief and Twelve from the Street Fighter series are two examples. I prefer them over Ryu, Akuma and many other scrub-favorites because they're harder to learn (thus more fun to win as), and they have better designs, personalities and stories.
I find it sad when the most difficult character/vehicle/weapon to master also happens to be one of the least intriguing ones, if not the least intriguing one, Chris Redfield from the first Resident Evil game coming to mind. So I'm glad Scorpion is always easier to master than Baraka, as I find the latter overwhelmingly superior in pretty much every way as a character.
So bring on the challenging games! I want to play one that drives nearly everyone who plays it to utter insanity and hair pulling frustration! Though in my case, no games can be too hard as in, something I would consider impossible to beat. But I would certainly relish the difficulty. What about you?

Yes. But I can't tell you how many games had a challenge so difficult that I just put the game down and never picked it up again.
One thing I don't like is when games don't let you know what to do next. I love extremely linear games.

I could never put down a game for being difficult. Maybe you could give me some of these games' titles so I can try them out myself.
When I played Dead Space for the first time, I selected the hard difficulty right away. When I bought Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition for the PS3, it had been a while since I played the original version. I played the former on the medium difficulty without beating it (it was a rental and I didn't have enough time), but when I got the Gold Edition, I opted for the veteran difficulty immediatly. Nowadays if the hardest difficulty setting of any games I'm playing for the first time is already available, I do not hesitate. I select it! So much fun!
I dread playing any games on the easiest difficulty. Easy characters however, can remain fun if there is still a little challenge. For instance, Jill Valentine's scenario in the REmake is easier to beat than Chris', but not that much easier, especially since I like playing it the hard way.

Absolutely. What's the point of playing a game if it doesn't challenge you? If video games were just super easy I probably wouldn't play them.
Resident Evil 4 was super easy and it remains one of my favourite games.
I've grown out of video games and I'm at university right now so I really only brought multiplayer games so they're mostly fighting and racing, but if I look through my video game collection I can tell you the games I have with me that I never finished because of a challenge:
Killer 7. I don't think I ever got past the first or second level. I just have no idea what to do and these people touch me and explode and kill all of my characters and I'm just like damn this game looks and plays so cool but I suck.
StarFox Assault. I can't remember how far I am in the game, but it's a boss battle where you're in an airwing. I just can't beat that boss.
Dementium: The Ward - I don't even remember where I am in this game I think I just beat a boss who was in a wheel chair.
Resident Evil - I know I just beat a tree boss or a shark but I don't know what to do next.
It's amazing actually, going through my games I realized that I have in fact beat a lot of them. One game that I didn't bring with me, but it's the number one game I had in mind when I first replied to this post about how many games I've put down because I could never beat is Viewtiful Joe. I got to this part where you have to beat every boss in the game in succession and I just can't do it.
You know maybe I just suck. I get lost or can't beat a boss and I put the game down and then when I pick it up again I have no idea where I am or what I have to do and then I have to start over. This happened to me in Skies of Arcadia: Legends, which is yet another game on the long list of games that I've never beaten.

Sometimes. The most challenging game I've played is F-Zero GX, super hard game but totally awesome.
I don't have it but Vanquish seems really hard.

It depends on the genre, when I'm playing a fighter, I don't want to fight the same boss ten times and only win because the A.I. lets me, that's not fun.
Now don't get me wrong, I like challenging bosses and fights in fighters, just not blatantly ridiculous stuff, like hitting the boss before they have a chance to hit you and your attack does zero damage because the boss was in the process of doing something (Azazel, I'm looking at you).
I thought Sonic Adventure 2 was challeging especially the later levels for Sonic and Shadow BUT it was fun, so I didn't get too mad about it.
Resident Evil 4 provided a challenge for me, though it didn't get super hard till the regenerators, I felt so helpless fighting them and I would just run for dear life to escape their grasp, good times.
Star Fox Assault had some very difficult parts, but it was pretty fun so I let it slide, though those ground missions were horrendous sometimes,
I like a challenge for a game, it makes it all satisfying to complete it; however, I do NOT like trying to clear something 30 times and failing because it's just that hard, that's not fun, that's just frustrating and I don't usually get frustrated easily.

I dig Twelve, but Zangief can go die somewhere. Ibuki is my all time favorite Street Fighter character by way of Mortal Kombat tainting the fighter genre with ninjas. Her moves are interesting to me as well, but I'm not sure if she's difficult to use.
I loved Devil May Cry 3 and people cried like bitches about how hard it was. Hell, I was 15 when it came out and beat the shit out of it with pure determination.
I won't lie about dreading playing Hard mode with Chris in Resident Evil, but for curiosity's sake I did it. Narrowly escaping death in RE is a feeling that's always euphoric. Then it's worrying about just what may have been placed in the corridor you're heading to. That's just dreadful.
I like challenging games, but not when the challenge comes in the form of straight cheapness. Arkham Asylum comes to mind where suddenly you can die in 3-4 hits regardless of your armor level. Really Rocksteady?
Didn't stop me from going through it though, because that game is fun as fuck by default!

Lol I'm the opposite. I LOVE not knowing what they expect, gives me motivation to look under every stone, focus on side quests, and really get into the world of the game. One thing I didnt like about Twilight Princess was that is was very very linear... it was clear how the game must be played and in what order. While I LOVED that in Ocarina of Time you can do either the Spirit Temple or Shadow Temple first. I always did Spirit first, just cause thats how i did it.
Challenging wise, i have put games down before. Resident Evil for Gamecube was simply TOO MUCH GAME for me! hahaha until i got that grenade launcher glitch, i was just too scared to pick it up again... it was too difficult!!!

I dont mind a challenge.... But there's only ONE game that makes/made me want to shoot up everything in sight, Dark Souls, i've tryed to beat it, but its so god damned hard, it's difficulty makes it hard for me to actually enjoy it. There's a line between Challengely Fun and Pull-your-motherfucking-head-off... Dark Souls crosses that line...

How is it hard?
Yes at the beggining, when you have no idea how combat, leveling-up, and enemy patterns pan out, it's tough as nails. But after a good 2 hours, the rest of the game should be relatively familiar and thus, much easier.

I've beaten almost every game I've picked up. I'm just one of those completers and I as much as I don't want to do it I will. But one game in particular comes to my head that I couldn't beat. Resident Evil Code Veronica. Played 7 different times and I gave up on the same spot 7 different times. I pretty much have that game memorized to the point where I have to fight Tyrant on the plane which I can't beat till this day. I havent beat dark souls but that because I rented it. I've switched difficulties on Dante's Inferno when I fought the devil which I regretted later cause I took the easy way out. God of war 3 on the highest difficulty makes me feel like a boss everytime I beat a boss.
So yes I do like challenging games. Except Resident Evil Veronica.....that evil game.

Don't be daft. I know harder game. Same game but on co op, that will make any grown man cry
Ninja Gaiden was responsible for my first personal TV's screen having a dent and the NES controller's corner having a crack in it. Both happened at the same time.
I love a challenge these days especially though, most games are too easy. Looking forward to Arkham City's New Game+, I hear it's tough but fair.
