The skipping I hear is on various DVD discs from different companies aswell. The discs are all flawless (no scratches). It's definitely a player problem because the skipping is random, and can't be repeated at the same point in a movie. It's just a 1/2 second skip when it occurs but it's annoying.
I happened 3 times when I was watching Spiderman (DD 5.1) and 2 times while watching Ice Age (Dolby surround 2.0). It happened in few other movies I tested and sometimes it didn't happened at all.
My DVD Player is a Pioneer 343, I bought it 5 years ago.
Do you think I need to get a new DVD player?

It may be that the dvd player's lens is dirty, have you tried cleaning it, any CD based lens cleaner will work with DVD give it a go.

Yeah, like Terranova said, your lense is probably dirty. But if you've had your DVD player for five years, I think it maybe time for an upgrade, anyway. A DVD player isn't as durable as a VCR. But that's what I would do, I'd buy a new DVD player.

Thanks guys. Yeah, I cleaned the lens and I also open the box to clean it myself because it was still doing it.
I guess I'll have to buy a new one. Do you guys have any recommendations?

Yes, it is better. But only if you have a progressive scan tv as well for it to work. If your tv is not HDTV or EDTV ready, then having that feature on your DVD player is just a waste of money if you're only buying it for the progressive scan.

Yeah for the moment I still have a regular TV, well a 42" Regular TV grin. I plan to get a Widescreen TV this year, probably HDTV.
What exacly happens if a progressive Scan DVD player is hooked up on a regular TV?

Well if you play the DVD player in the reg mode, it will play fine. But if you hit the progressives scan button on a reg tv then the screen stays black. I can't recall if you can hear it still or not, but I know you can't see shit lol. But if you're planning on getting an HDTV soon, I would go ahead and get the progressive scan player so you will have that already when you get your new tv grin

The same problem happens with me. I call these "skip spots" because it skips for like half a second. I've seen so many of them, I'm used to it now.

Well Max if you are going to get a new one then I reccomend getting a Mitsubishi dvd player. They make very high quality products for home entertainment. Infact they specialize in digital video and HD formats. I have a 50 inch bigscreen hd tv from them and dvd player. The picture is exelent. Make sure that when you get a dvd player that it not only has dolby digital ,which is standard, but also has DTs. DTS offers a much richer and wider sound field and usues your home theatere system fully. My advice is to get the model I have which is DD-6040 It has progressive scan aswell

Well, if only the sound skips, it would sound more like a d/a converter problem to me, maybe if you use different regions you must tweak the internal settings of your dvd player, like my first.

My first was a regional free dvd player, but the sounds skipped a few times but when i tweaked my internal settings the problems dissappeared. A few months later i bought a new one btw. I was getting tired of screwing around with the settings

Thanks for the Mitsubishi advice.
I also made my comparition of the DTS over Dolby Digital. If only all DVDs could have the DTS feature,...
Regarding the regions, I only use region 1 (US) dvds. I never touch the internal settings, well yes but not since I hooked up a AV Amplifier like a year ago I think.
I'll check that out aswell.

Thanks again,
