fixing xbox red ring of death
anybody ever successfully fixed an xbox that had the red ring of death? i just got mine for the 1st time tonight, while trying to play MK. I saw there are some video tutorials on youtube, but different people say different things. just wondering what is the easiest/most efficient/least expensive way to fix it, or is it likely to fuck up again and I'd be wiser to just buy a new system? thanks!

You're gonna have to buy a new system amigo.
The only trick I performed was the wrap it up in a towel trick until it overheats and worked after a couple of weeks. It will give you the ring again.
So if you have a warranty, you can send in your box to Microsoft and they'll give you a new one for free. It takes a while though. Hope this helped.

One thing that should be said is that the towel trick can work, but it isn't safe. If done do frequently, it can overheat the Xbox to the point of warping your motherboard.
I've got a buddy who has fixed several Xbox's. From what I remember, the red ring is caused when the little heat absorbers inside the Xbox wear out. My friend would open the Xbox, wrap up some pennies in electrical tape, and use those to replace the heat absorbers. They worked like a dream from there on out.
As you can tell my technical knowledge of the Xbox's interior isn't the greatest, but it should point you in the right direction. You should also be aware that taking apart the Xbox will void your warranty, so consider your options first.

The towel trick will just ruin your system. I'm sorry but who ever came up that solution for the system was a moron. Almost all electronic device manuals say not even leave it on the carpet because the vents can get blocked, and cause the system to overheat. Wrapping the system in a towel completely blocks the vents, and causes all heat to build up inside the system.
If at all possible I would honestly first suggest sending the system to Microsoft to let them fix the problem, if it is still under warranty (3 years from date of purchase on the Red ring of death). It will be completely free of charge too.
I'm not too familiar with the RROD either myself, but from what I remember reading about it, I thought it was due to poor soldering on the heat sinks/cooling fans for either the GPU, or CPU, and those where coming off, allowing either of them to overheat. lf your familiar with building PC's and are going to open the system up and attempt to fix the problem yourself, I would suggest looking into how to re-solder the heat sinks, and re-set the cooling fans for them to fix the problem.

I got a RROD in 2009 after playing Resident Evil 5 pretty much non stop for 2 weeks plus it was an early model.
I called Microsoft and I told the woman my,
"Xbox is on the fritz" and she said
"Sorry, your warranty has expired, please pay 75 quid for a repair".
But then I said, "I got this red ring thing" then she said
"well why didnt u say so!?" and I got it repaired for free!
Well actually they sent me a new Xbox.
It was all done within a week & I still got it.
So basically what I'm trying to say is just ring Microsoft and get a replacement the legit way to be safe.
Saying you have a RROD is like a golden ticket to get a new one or something.

I had only one or two rings but what I did was take it to Best Buy and they told me to take it away from any heat source it worked alittle but it came back so I kept it out of the little heat source and unplugged all wires for a few hours and it was good as new.Now I doubt it'll work for the red ring of doom but hell give it a shot its not like it will ruin it.Best of luck to ya :)
I've experienced the ring 3 times actually. The first time resulted in me having to get a new X-Box. But the second time, I quickly turned the system off, then waited a few days, and everything was fine. The same happened the third time. It's definitely the result of overheating and stuff like that, so all you really have to do is let it cool. Although if it still has the ring after a few days, you might have to send it to Microshizzle, or get a new one completely.
