Found something interesting on the interwebz yesterday and thought I'd share with you. Hideo Kojima talks about how Japanese developers just can't stand up to the FPS craze anymore because the audience can't accept "new experiences". It's hard for Japan to go up against triple-A titles these days.

Link to the article

I'm just curious to know what any of you guys think of this matter. Do you agree with Mr. Kojima? When will we get out of the FPS craze, or are we going to see no ceasing of it for a long time?

Americans like to kill themselves and others more than any other country. Thus FPS are not going away in this country anytime soon.

I'm not sure about all FPSers. But I think that after how disappointed most people were with MW3 I think the next COD will be the turning point. But that's just for COD. But once COD goes FPS will start to fade.

He was talking about guns i'm pretty sure. What he's saying is "americans love themselves a gun and will shoot it at anyone, including themselves" (correct me if im wrong) Not suicide bombing.

I'm pretty sure even gunfire is more prevalent in unstable countries.

I don't like the direction of gaming to be honest.

I agree with him, I have seen so many unique games get minimal attentionthat were actually unique and fresh, like Okami or Psychonauts in terms of consumer acclaim(though reviewers loved them), while COD consistently gets high acclaim, while having lackluster, forgetable single player campaigns and only online as the the main draw.

The nonsense isn't going away...with the incessant releases every single year, there is no reason for them to change their formula: the masses are eating it up, why devote extra time and resources to doing things differently?

I get almost harassed by people I know because I DON'T play COD, I refuse to play a game that I do not like just because it's the cool thing to do and I know a lot of people who play just because their friends do...it's just sad, play a game because you like it. It's way too serious business for me.

I've never had a problem with the FPS genre, Golden Eye was cool, but the stagnation and lack of innovation is not cool.

Much like the film industry, the gaming industry, due to the MASSIVE amount of money that's required in development, would rather bank on guaranteed sales (aka established franchises/genres) than risk investments on something new and unique.

We'll get out of the FPS era once the general public desires for something new.

Japanese developers are so far behind right now its crazy. If anything its Japanese developers that can't accept new ideas. Companies like Capcom and Square are so tied up in doing what's traditional and what has always worked that they've failed to make any progress this gen.

Western developers have stomped them in every genre and at every front this generation. The JRPG has become a niche genre that isn't as universally praised as it used to be. Western developers have taken over the RPG genre with innovative games like Fallout, Mass Effect, BioShock and Elder Scrolls (which consoles finally have the power to run). MK, the only real western fighting franchise, has received more praise than any eastern fighter has this generation. Forza has taken the racing genre away from Gran Turismo.

Just about every genre that Japan had control of a generation ago now belong to the west because of innovation and experimentation. Japan is just so far behind right now with technology. I mean, when was the last time you played a Japanese game online? Besides Capcom (and even they're terrible at this with all of the DLC and bs they're pulling off) no Japanese developer is really embracing the new way to play games.

As for FPS? I don't really like them but I won't go out of my way to trash them. They are what they are and they'll likely be gone in a couple of years. The only thing I don't like is that just about every big game nowadays has to have a gun in them. I don't like that at all.

I don't agree with him. There really is only a handful of FPS that show up year after year, and the Wii lacks any good selling FPS. Plus you think of games like God of War, Assassin's Creed and Uncharted which aren't FPS.

I think the real problem with Japanese developers is partly due to the fact that they can't do story telling in a game without disconnecting the player from the gameplay experience. As much as I liked MGS 4 I just felt a huge disconnect while playing it because of how lengthy the cut-scenes are. The same goes for games like Final Fantasy, compared to Elder Scrolls and Fallout which have almost no cut-scenes.

I think the other reason is because Japanese developers haven't been able to integrate multi-player/social experience into their games like FPS. The fighting genre aside no Japanese game really embraces or integrates a compelling multi-player aspect. Resident Evil, Final Fantasy (the MMO FF XI didn't really catch on), Devil May Cry, Mario haven't been able to integrate multi-player well. The few Nintendo games that have done it well haven't had the success that FPS have had because they suffer from hardware drawbacks on the Wii. I think the only two games that actually did integrate multi-player to some success was Lost Planet, and Phantasy Star, but the developers really didn't support those games here like they where huge AAA games.

[edit]: I also think another reason why Japanese games have lagged behind is because they lack dynamic gameplay elements. A lot of Japanese gameplay mechanics just seem stiff, archaic and one track minded.

From what I've read, the Japanese people have never liked the FPS genre specifically. Nintendo Wii has been successful compared to Gamecube, so they aren't doing that bad. Where are the Japanese strategy games? There aren't many of them. I've been waiting for a good real time strategy game (RTS) for a good while, C&C: Generals 2 might be the right choice. Diablo III is another game that interests me.
I've never put a dime or never owned any of the Call of Duty games, even if they might be good. There are so many equally as good - or better - games out there. I don't prefer MMORPGs either.
Frankly, I don't think that we are living in a drastic turning point of the gaming industry. Sure, OnLive will change the way games are played but the FPS games will likely always remain more-or-less. At first we had lots of WWII FPS games, now we have more modern FPS games and all this time we have had futuristic FPS games. After the modern FPS game boom is gone, I predict that there will be more room for innovations then.

I like some FPS, and I really don't have any problem with the genre at all. The problem here is Call of Duty. You'll see new ideas rise once people get bored of it, which is not happening anytime soon.

The genre I miss the most is 3D Platformer. Banjo-Kazooie/Tooie are still my favorite games ever, and there hasn't been a game like that for years.

I'm an old school gamer. I've grown to love FPS games in the current gen, but was flat out hating the genre before I gave it a chance. The first FPS game that gave interest to me was Bioshock. It was really an amazing adventure, direction and design. I tend to like more non-military shooter games because I'm really against war and all that crap, but I have given most games a chance like Battlefield and MW. I like them, but will probably rarely go back to playing them, and prefer to play some of my Japanese action titles like Ninja Gaiden 2, Street Fighter 4, Bayonetta, Devil May Cry, Tenchu, etc.

The argument about Western developers doing a better job overall against Japan, yes that is true, but it also depends on each individual gamer. For the most part, people jump on favorites bandwagon. I personally have a special interest in Japanese arts and games so I am somewhere in the middle. Action adventure / 3rd person and fighting games are my favorite genre so I don't really care if the FPS genre dies, as it is honestly becoming a thing of the past. Maybe the Kinect will eventually be the FPS killer in the long run, who knows.

There are some amazing Japanese titles coming out this year that are non FPS games. Asura's Wrath, Anarchy Reigns, Metal Gear Rising, Dead or Alive 5, Street Fighter x Tekken, and Ninja Gaiden 3. Speaking of amazing Japanese titles, I have recently picked up and only a few hours into Dark Souls... holy shit, it is a really sweet and epic game.

I actually feel it is happening as we speak. I did not believe it would but it is. What has convinced me is that 3 of the biggest CoD Youtube commentators around (who get paid for doing it and get millions of views for their CoD vids) are moving away from the series. (Talking about Shoostybang, The SandyRavage and TheRealPWNstar) SandyRavage, considered by many to be the best CoD player in the world has even rented himself a server on which he is hosting BF3 games now. The other two have both came out and said how they hate and are bored with CoD and that BF3 is now their prefered game and the one they will be playing more, citing innovation and DICE's ability to listen to what fans want and properly patch issues as reasons.

These guys have huge followings and have many fans amoung the CoD kiddies. Them saying these things will surely have a influence. Even if it just wakes the COD franchise up and get's them innovating again it will be a step in the right direction.

Shooters are good but my interest really begins and ends with realistic tactical shootes. The big issue with shooters the past couple of years is that they are always trying to mimic COD - many times by sacrificing gameplay and design elements from previous games. That's what I hate currently. I'm sick of all of these games becoming so similar and unimaginitive. It drives me crazy.

You guys really don't get it
Open you eyes
Wake up
FPS is the future of gaming
We are headed in the right direction and soon amazing feats will be achieved
Its just the beginning of an FPS generation and its only going to get better and better
There is a lot of room for first person shooters to evolve and grow, so much more can be done
I don't believe they will die out anytime soon
I believe they will become more and more advanced with real life physics and a new depth of realism without taking the fun part out
Just more depth but still not taking away enjoyment
Behold and wait
Put the FPS in the motion and feel its flow
Your a whole new generation
A FPS generation

Just barely. The United States comes in at #4 world wide, and is the highest developed country.

on topic note. as long as CoD continues to milk the casual console gaming market. there will be no end to the genre. your average joe doesn't give a shit about hardcore quality nitpicks.

I've got something of a loathing for the whole genre, really. They were called Doom clones at the start, with good reason. Personally, I don't even feel they've advanced far enough to even deserve escape from the term. I used to play them, but my interest died off. I haven't really bothered since Doom 3 and the original Goldeneye. It all just feels the same to me.
