First off, half os Will Smith's dialogue was bad. I mean almost bordering on Howard The Duck bad! But there were scenes where it really worked! His character's distain for robots is understandable early on, but when he reveals the incident where a girl dies, it's clear why in a way.
The robot that becomes self aware, "Sonny" as his creator called him, almost steals to movie. I like the look of the robots and "Sonny's" personality shows through. The actor who voiced him gave the robot character which was a good thing.
The creator said something about the possibility of a random occurance within the code or programming of a robot that would make it self-aware. Similar to what the guy in Jurasic Park said about nature finding a way.
The 3 Laws stated in the movie illustrate something about the concept of perfection. It can be too perfect.
1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2. A robot must obey orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.
What if robots evolved and became self aware and wanted their freedom from servicing humanity's needs, but at the same time abided by the 3 Laws? If anyone has seen their share of anime, you'll probably arrive at the real killer and the motive half way into the movie, but watching it to the end is well worth it!
The special effects paint the ladscape and the world 20+ years from now looks really interesting.
Overall grade: Solid A.

Not really! The premise showed up in Batman Returns.

About Catwoman, in Batman Returns, the director came out and said she never died in the movie, that's why she hit so many things on the way down. She hit the ground and suffered from brain damage -- she went crazy.
It's only now with the wanna-be Catwoman that they are trying to say she died.
Either way, it all comes down to freedom of speech... so fuck you both

This movie has bastardized his work. As an inspiring author, I would want to kill the man who took my story, twisted the plot into something totally different, and then tried to make millions of dollars off of it.

LOL! I haven't read his works either, but I understand what you're saying. The movie doesn't go into intellectual depth into the questions of morality and responsibility, although I wished it had. If it did, it would have been a much better movie, but it wouldn't have appealed to the PG-13 crowd either. You wanna reach more people? Fuck up the intent of the story where as it fits your target audience. If it was made to honor Asimov intention's for it to be taken seriously, then a better script, cast, and design would have been taken into account, but... Hollywood.
Yeah it was bullshit, but it was entertaining bullshit. At least rent it when it comes on DVD Temp. But hearing about Asimov might get me to reading his book to see what he really wanted us to think about.
Think about it doode.

Take corny, vaguely talented sci-fi veteran Will Smith, give him a book of bad one-liners to say, place him in front of a green screen, and animate thousands of generally identical robots around him that he has to "fight" and such.
Escuse me if I'm wrong, as I have not seen the movie, but it does look pretty dreadful.

yes but this is the case with most sci-fi books... they contain great philosophical and historical premises, and holywood rapes the original story and idea, creating a shadow, nay an empty shell of its original subject material...
but the movie really isn't THAT bad... if you want, rent it when it comes out... just be sure to set your brain to sizzle... oh and don't try to download it on Kazaa... goofy, bootlegging bastard
