The championships have ended! You're late to the party! 1st: RUS 2nd: SVK 3rd: CZE 4th: FIN
Where are them Canucks? Where are them New English and the Upper Midwestern peeps? Where are them Nordics, Germans, Frenchmen, Kazakhs, Russians, Czechs, the other Europeans and the Yankees?

Watching the ice hockey world championships, surely! This year, 2012: will any of the three large ice hockey countries win? You know what happened in the yesteryear. I have faith in Brent Sutter's Canada this year.
The tournament will be hosted by the last year's finalists in Stockholm, Sweden and Helsinki, Finland (and Tsung's island) but the cross-over system will be implemented as of the semi-finals which will be played in Helsinki. Medal games will be played in Helsinki as well. This particular tournament will also determine the countries’ seeding for the men’s Olympic Ice Hockey tournament in Sochi for the 2014 Winter Olympics.
The United States vs. France will launch the tournament in Helsinki in Friday 4th and Germany vs. Italy coevally in Stockholm respectively.
Wikipedia Home Page | IIHF Home Page
There were countries from literally every continent competing for the qualification but ultimately only 16 nations qualified for the elite-pool tournament. 13 nations from Europe, two nations from North America and Kazakhstan from Asia are represented. The full list of 16 goes here:Group Helsinki: Finland • Canada • United States • Switzerland • Slovakia • Belarus • France • Kazakhstan
Group Stockholm: Russia • Sweden • Czech Republic • Germany • Norway • Latvia • Denmark • ItalyThere were 46 countries competing for qualification of which many didn't just make it such as Austria, Great Britain, Japan, South Korea, Australia, Netherlands, Poland, South Africa, Croatia, Iceland, China and Mexico.

Which group and what nations will you support? My full support goes to the team Helsinki, whomever from it triumphs. Share your thoughts and... as Nephrite the moderator–gentleman likes to pull it out: Get hippo hype!
Tournament begins in 8 HRS @ 4:15am CST spanning from the May 4th to May 20th

I'll root for USA if they make the medal round, but otherwise I'm looking forward to more good hockey.

How do you think the United States will manage this year? It hasn't won a world championship since 2004. The team USA is undergoing a generation switch from what I've heard but there's quite a lot talent amongst them. Jack Johnson seems like a good leader with experience.

You know what? I read that they are selling tickets to the USA vs. France game for mere five euros and giving tickets free in gas stations and furniture stores. The tickets were originally super expensive but now that they realized that people aren't buying them, they are basically handing out the tickets for free to fill the grandstand. Maybe I should go there wearing some Goro attire and a bucket in my head or something equally as crazy.

I think that's because you're more likely to see a 12-0 USA win in that game than anything resembling a close game.

I don't think the Americans (or Canadians, for that matter) are going to win gold, for the simple reason that in most of the other power countries (Sweden, Finland, Russia, Czech Republic, Switzerland, etc), their seasons are already over, and the best guys from those leagues plus NHLers who aren't in the playoffs can participate.

My money is on Russia, actually.

USA won France by 7-2
Germany demolished Italy by 3-0
Canada just won Slovakia by 3-2
The Czechs are winning Danes by 1-0
Finland vs. Belarus will start in an hour

That's a valid point, yet it hasn't stopped Canada from winning before, I think that Canada has learned from its past failures and will be somewhat successful this year. I'll place five virtual coins for Canada. Russia remains statistically ranked number one however, even though it didn't succeed last year, so it's a safe bet really. There was a hilarious ranking list made by IIHF of the 16 countries, you should definitely check it out, LOL.

The Czech Republic overcame Denmark by 2-0
Finland devoured Belarus by 1-0
Sweden fucked up Norway by 3-1

That's it for today. Tomorrow will be a match really worthwhile: USA vs. Canada. Who will win? Flawless Victory? Fatality. Other than that, there will be Switzerland vs. Kazakhstan, Latvia vs. Russia (LOL) and finally Sweden vs. the Czech Republic – another interesting one. Don't hesitate to participate the topic whether you're a complete rookie or a professional!

Switzerland tricked Kazakhstan by 5-1
Russia blew up Latvia by 5-2
USA recycled the CAN by 5-4
Sweden ate the chips Czechs by 3-0

They do, but the tiny Latvia didn't just have the odds against the huge Russia this time. A different outcome would've been a great surprise. So, USA and Sweden got pretty good starts winning big names with a C.
Tomorrow will practically be two interesting matches, Russia vs. Norway and Finland vs. Slovakia. Norway's playing remains unknown to me but I read that it's strengthened for this year. Perhaps I will watch the Latvia game now to some extent, too. What are your predictions for tomorrow?
Sunday's matches
FRA–KAZ
DEN–ITA
FIN–SVK
RUS–NOR
SUI–BLR
GER–LAT

Norway also has some good skaters. If I recall, they have decent goalies as well, but lack sufficient scoring punch. Mats Zuccarello won't be with them because the Rangers are still in the playoffs, but they're not a team to take lightly either way, much like Latvia.

France bombarded Kazakhstan by 6-3
Italy offered Denmark pasta by 4-3
Slovakia lost to Finland who won 2-1
Nor did NOR win RUS who won 4-2
Switzerland clocked Belarus by 3-2
Latvia fucked up Germany by 3-2

WT... Denmark lost to Italy? Unbelievable... Latvia beat Germany! I guess I need to change the LOL to GQA (Giggling Quietly Alone) . Monday's here:
FRA–CAN
CZE–NOR
USA–SVK
DEN–SWE

France–Canada nor CZE–NOR are nothing too extraordinary but still watchable, United Statues–Slovakia should be interesting and SweDENmark marks pretty much already a victory for Sweden I bet.

Zmoke, did you see the hit on Starchenko in the France-Kazakhstan game? Dirty play for sure, I'm sure Treille will be getting suspended.

Yes, I watched the recap of it though! That was very unsportsmanlike, hopefully we won't see that again.
Canada fried the French by 7-2
The Czechs smoked Norway out by 4-3
Slovakia crumbled the Statues by 4-2
Sweden swept the other DEN by 6-4

Canada did some tricky goals today, well performed. USA didn't play that well. Slovakia shot its fourth goal to an empty net. Denmark surely gave some challenge to Sweden. How about Tuesday:
BLR–KAZ
LAT–ITA
FIN–SUI
RUS–GER

P.S. You may be able to watch the matches live from YT.com/icehockey.

According to today's games, it doesn't look too good for them.
Belarus burned Kazakhstan by 3-2
Latvia returned the expired Grandiosa pizza to Italy by 5-0
Finland adjusted the clock for the clock makers (SUI) by 5-2
Germany couldn't handle the Putinka vodka losing to Russia by 2-0

Wednesday:
SVK–KAZ
LAT–ITA
CAN–SUI
SWE–GER

As for the next matches, the latter two must be worth watching, if you desire a better analysis on how Germany and Switzerland may deal with the top five countries (maybe they will win, maybe not). Latvia and Slovakia know how to play, but their opponents aren't exactly equal. The underdogs should put up some good fights though.

Trivia: The logo of the competition has acronyms "MM" and "VM" put in them. The first is Finnish for "maailmanmestaruus" and the latter is Swedish for "världsmästerskap" and the both mean "world championship".

Yeah, but the Finnish Lions sent the team USA back to India. grin
Your guesstimation was mind-blowing – Russia's victory really came from out of nowhere! The Big Red Machine did basically everything to guarantee their victory this year; even their head coach changed. Malkin was great.

It's all about the Putin vodka, Putinka, these days in Ruscha, by the way. I guess I'll have to drink Putinka for misery because Canada didn't succeed this year either. This year was extraordinary in the sense of having two hosts. It's never occured in the past, but it will continue next year. The year after, 2014, Belarus – a country under dictarorship, is told to host it. There have been protests about that quite recently though for the sake of the Belarussian citizens' civil rights. We are left with one question however: What's your explanation for Germany and Switzerland, m0s3pH Stalin? ;-[)

Props to Slovakia for going toe-to-toe yet again with the Big Six. If they win a medal at the upcoming Olympics they should start talking about Big Seven.

Yup, props to Slovakia. It's a lot about "Czechoslovakia", "Fennoscandia" and the big nations USA, Canada (=N. America) and Russia these days.See ya next year, folks!.
