Hey everyone, this is a problem that's been bothering me for awhile, and I wanted to see if any of you know how to fix it.

My computer is pretty new, it's a Windows XP, and I don't know all the mega-this and giga-that, so don't ask me about hard drive and RAM stuff, sorry.

My computer slows down when I play games on it. Only when I play a game of some sort. All games that are on a CD and emulators. Some people can't stand playing against me in MK over the internet because the lag is horrible. I have a LAN, and it's really fast, so the internet's not the problem. It happens offline as well.

What happens is when I'm playing a game, the first few minutes the speed is fine, then it freezes and lags really bad. Then it goes fine for another minute, then it lags again. This goes on as long as I'm playing a game.

The funny thing is that it only happens with games, not with other things like Windows Media files or Quicktime files.

If anybody can help me, I would appreciate it.

Well, it would be nice to know what you do have in terms of "giga-that" and "mega-this." tongue Especially the video card, because it could be a driver issue. Or, you might have random apps running in the background that you don't know about.

That would be my guess, since that problem (when I DON'T "fix" it, of course) is what causes lag for me when I play on XBC.

It sounds like a video card issue to me from what you've stated. But you do need to let us know the giga & mega stuff of your PC.

The best way to tell what is causing the issue is to run the performance monitor and save the log to view it.

But since you don't know the giga's & mega's of your computer you most likely wouldn't understand on how to use Perfmon either....

I don't think it's my video card. When I first got my computer, everything worked fine. No lag, no problems. Then all of a sudden, it started to happen. I did a VirusScan and got rid of all the useless stuff I didn't need. But, it didn't help. The strange thing is that it only does it with games. I only have Myst, Riven, Myst III, Starcraft, Warcraft III, and Worms Armageddon games from a CD. They all slow down too.

It only does it with your games because it might be the video card/driver issue or random, hidden apps. I'm not sure how much spy-ware can influence perfomance, though. Not much I would think. Just, back up your docs and vids/media then re-install everthing. OS, drivers, just start fresh. Also, what virus scan did you use? Sometimes VS's will grab random .dll files and if you toss those you can mess shit up, too.

A really easy way to find out the giga-this mega-that info about your computer is to open Microsoft Word, click Help, go down to 'About Microsoft Word', and click 'System Info. The basic things that you'll want to know are in the "System Summary' list. Look at the parts that say: Total Physical Memory, Available Physical Memory, and Processor and type what you finf on here. That will probably help people to find out your problem better.

Thanks everyone.

Satyagraha, I used McAfee VirusScan.
