I'm surprised an "official" thread hasn't been made already, and I was reluctant to do an "obvious" thread, but it hasn't been done yet, so...

For those who have seen the movie, what do you think? It's currently one of the highest rated superhero movies of all time, even scoring more critical acclaim via rotten tomatoes than Batman Begins and Spider-man 2, which is pretty impressive considering Iron Man's not really an "A-list" mainstream superhero.

So, thoughts? Impressions? Criticism? Praise?

i saw it on opening day yesterday, and i was completely blown away. I think it easilly surpasses spider man 3. I loved tony, he's such a dick but in a funny way. I also really liked all the suits, except for the one in the start which was awkward and clumsy. the only bad thing was after he came back from afghanistan, the story started to get really confusing. the big battle at the end was also kinda confusing and hard to follow, and it had a bit too many cliches like "monster picks up car full of screaming mother and children and tosses it, hero catches it and puts them down safely" and "monster attacks bus full of screaming peds, hero has to save them all". but i think apart from that, most of the movie is very original. the VERY end of the movie was slightly disappointing.

Okay, I just got back from seeing it.

Consider me impressed.

Unlike Fantastic Four, Ghost Rider, or even Spider-man, this is a film that doesn't insult my intelligence. Its logic is plausible, its world and characters believable. Robert Downey Jr. IS Iron Man. He perfectly captures the character, ever wise-crack, every fear, every flaw, every nuance. But the entire cast is pretty dang solid. They made Gwyneth Paltrow really attractive... I don't even remember her looking that good before.

The opening act was surprisingly brutal. This isn't Spider-man where some kid is dealing with whiny girlfriends, a nagging aunt, and keep his grades high, this is MAN dealing with adult problems, real world issues, and suffering the consequence of inadvertently assisting in the deaths of innocents. The film does have it's spectacle moments, but they almost seem small scale compared to the inner battle he has with what he, and his company, has done. And yet he's not all grim and serious, thankfully. He could've been another angsty brooding hero, a'la Batman, but the film has fun showing his eccentric, fun side, even during times of trouble, and it's all the better for it. We don't need any more heroes crying over dead loved ones or having cheesy mantras like "with great responsibility..." or "it's not who I am that defines me....". Yeah, yeah. Shut up and go beat up the badguys.

And do that he does. The action in this film is very limited. That's actually a good thing. But what it does do is build the tension towards these confrontations. Watching Tony build his first armor to take on his captors is exhilirating to watch. Watching him take his final MKIII armor out to kick some terrorist ass made me smile so hard. The film has GREAT pacing.

But more than that, there are great nods to the fans. From the Iron Man cartoon theme song on Rhode's cell phone to references to the Mandarin, to the reference to War Machine, to S.H.I.E.L.D. to the jaw-dropping revelation (after the credits) that greatly hypes me up for what could be on the horizon.

This film could have been a disaster, like Fantastic Four, Ghost Rider, or Daredevil, which failed to unite, excite, and satisfy fans. On the contrary, this film is a smashing success that fans and critics have been very supportive of.

A sequel is likely, and unlike some movies, I simply can't wait. Great film with great performances with great directing and great pacing and great action and... you get the point. Probably the best superhero movie in a good long while and the first real contender to Batman Begin's top-superhero-movie title.

I love IM. But I'm waiting till the DVD drops. I figure why waste money to see it 1x in theaters. Rather then buy the DVD, which your already putting towards what it would cost to see it in theaters opening day, and watch it as many times as you want. Granted it comes with special features. That's just my perspective on the whole thing. I am however playing the Movie Game.

Respectfully disagree. It's leaps and bounds better than Spider-man 3, easily. Personally, though I love Spider-man, I enjoyed Iron Man much more than the first Spider-man movie as well. I'm still not sure if I liked Spider-man 2 better than it, but Iron Man comes close.

Yeah, its quite a hard decision. Maybe i think iron man is better than spiderman 1 or maybe 2, but i really enjoyed part 3.

This is just me but I rate them:

1) Batman Begins (As close to perfect as a comic film has gotten)
2) Iron Man (Adult themes, grade A acting)
3) Spiderman 2 (Doc Ock, best villian by far IMO)
4) Spiderman (Good for a start)
5) Spiderman 3 (Too many villians, too much goblin time, too little Venom time)

At first I wasn't interested in watching Ironman really. But a friend of mine, who's a girl told me she saw it with some people and at first the idea of going to it seemed lame to her. But she said she was glad to see the movie, because it was really good and she loved it. So I went to go see it with some friends and wow I was so glad.

My only fear is that the 1st movie was so good, it might actually make the 2nd movie look not so great ;x

For those who want to know the name of the composer for the movie, his name is Ramin Djawadi, and he did the awesome piece where Stark is testing flying the MKII. The piece is called "Driving with the top down".

I loved the movie, but coming from somebody who's been a fan of the character for almost 2 and a half decades, as well as being an avid supporter of the movie from the very beginning, that shouldn't be surprising.

It's very rare when an actor pulls off a character so well. And I will be hearing Downey's voice every time I read the comics from now on.

Garlador pretty much touched on everything I was going to say about the movie, but for the truly hardcore, I want people to keep an eye on the monitors in the background after the MKII test flight. ((I don't think that's really a spoiler)). You'll see nods to two of Stark's other armor concepts, the Silver Centurion and the Golden Avenger.

Apparently the sequel will have Iron Man side by side with Thor. And really, we all know the Mandarin is going to be the next villain.

NOT the best superhero movie in terms of fine cinema, there was not enough emotional weight to the story to elevate it to Spider-Man 2 levels.

However, the movies was just fucking badass. RDJr derserves a nod for that performance, that fucker can act.

Great actions, great performances.. not much of a story but the movie didn't call for it.

I'm looking forward to Ironman2.
