I have been a fan of MK since the beginning and
it has inspired me to make my own game!
I filmed myself and a friend Practising fighting moves
(Classic mk style) and put them in the game!
Trouble is, I just can't think of anything original for the
game, my mind keeps thinking of MK.
ANY ideas anyone? No?

Well, here's a suggestion. If you are going to do fatalities, use Paintshop to make it look MK-ish. I don't think you should use Paint for the graphics.

Well... here's the thing. It's fine to use the MK series as an inspiration for your game, however relying on even the most miniscule aspect of it won't make your truly original. So here's a few thingas that might help.

Creating Your Own Universe

You can't have the universe where your characters exist resemble the MK universe in any way. You don't have to have the period in which your game takes place happen in the present. It could take place in the past or in the future. You also have to paint the landscape of what kind of world or worlds exist within your universe. This can also reflect on the kinds of characters/creatures that you create for your game.

Character Development

If you start off creating ninjas that resemble the ones in the MK series, then you're really not doing yourself any good cause they won't be original. Your characters can be from any walk of life, but they should be ones that are believable. They must fit within your universe and they must be totaly different from one another. One grip I have with some of the MK characters in previous games is that they weren't fully realized or just clones.

Start with the vital statistics such as height, ethnicity, weight, etc. Also come up with a thousand names to give to them. Even names that may be a good one for a MK character will do. As long as you come up with it first! Really do some research in lookin for names. Look at different languages, cultures, and mythologies of various kinds. Even making up names right off the fly can work as well. If you're really committed to making a game then you gotta do a lot of the leg work. If it's just you and your friend as of now, then your idea with either succeed or fail depending on if you guys really do the work needed.

Who are the heroe's and who are the villain's? Gotta figure this out was well!

Fighting Styles

Do some research by sitting in a Borders and read up on every martial arts style you can. Be wary of what you find on the internet. The problem is that some schools have issues and or disputes with other schools and everyone has varying opinions on whether so or so style was created by.... Big Bird lets say. If you do pull sources for research, only take in the information that everyone consistantly agrees on. Be judicious with everything else you see. Always find an independant source to try to filter out the egocentrism of some schools. Also go to various martial arts schools to ask about their system and it's origins, if they know, which they really should. Learn about the concepts, both internal and external, of the disciplines. Knowing this will help to add to the characters persona and even overall appearance. Now you can be creative as well. You can invent a fictional martial art disclipline for a character. As long as you employ faux concepts and philosophies as if it was an actual style.

If you have it in mind to take you idea to a game company, have your idea down as if it was your religion. If they ask you a question on what sort of gameplay would want to employ, make sure you have an idea. It doesn't have to be etched in stone, just as long they see that you and your friend really put in hundreds of hours of research and planning into your characters, story, etc. That will impress anybody you see cause more often than not, people just have a scant idea and more of a dream and a prayer. The boyscout creed must be your mantra. "Always be prepared!"

Hope it helps!
