Microsoft is quietly scanning the hard drives of Xbox Live users to see if they have been modded.

yup i found this interesting tidbit at http://www.gamespot.com so who ever modded there xbox beware.i wonder what they do if they found a modded xbox on xbl.

The official story: "One of the ways Microsoft protects its intellectual property, in this case Xbox, is through the use of innovative technical solutions. We believe technology, in addition to education and awareness can be effective in protecting publishers' rights while maintaining a rich product experience for customers--by ensuring the use of genuine hardware and software."--official Microsoft spokesperson.

What we heard: When we started to hear the far-fetched but fairly numerous reports that Xbox Live users' hard drives were being remotely scanned by M'soft to see whether they were factory issue or illegally modified, we became curious, and just a little paranoid.

Bogus or not bogus?: After additional reads of the Microsoft statement, especially the lead, which began, "As you know, intellectual property is very important to Microsoft," we knew: Not bogus.

I do know thhere are routine updates to XB Live, and patches are downloaded...

Sounds like a great idea to me. It keeps the possibility of cheating out of the equation, and if someone wants to mod their Xbox, let 'em, as long as they don't go online...

There is away around it. And I can't really blame MS, though moded Xboxs are fun and all but I see why they're doing it.

lol, I wonder how they're gonna do to the people they catch... there's really no copyright since they DO Buy/rent these games... everyone i know with a box has it modded along with a 250 Gig HD filled with 30+ games, they go online through hacked servers, so I doubt M$ will catch 'em...

I say good for them. Router Firewalls, additional xboxes, alternate servers. There's other means. But it keeps Live! users free of cheaters.

There's not really an online workaround, since your XB has to be checked before you log onto XB Live. As for what MS does...they kill your Live account.

It's about damn time...

I wish SOMEBODY would do the same, but for XBC users.

That way those damn cheaters who mod their boxes would be forced to play the same way those who don't mod play the games.

Hmmm, but what of the people who get an X-box, add in a larger Hard Drive just to increase space for levels they download or memory card saves, as well as ripped music they wanna use in games?

Do they get prosecuted too? I don't own an X-box yet, but if I got one, I'd want a larger HD in it and not to use for cheating or pirate activities.

Well, when you put a larger hard drive into your Xbox, I believe all the extra space gets put on the F or G partition. Saves, music, and downloaded Live content get stored on the E partition. If you move that stuff from the E partition, the Xbox (or the game) won't know where to find it.
So, really, the only stuff you can store on the F/G partition is stuff you put on there yourself, stuff that Microsoft didn't intend to be there.

See, they do stupid stuff like concentrate on whether somethings been modified, rather than concentrating on games.

If you dont do it the fun way, youre gonna loose.

Nintendo doesnt like online capabilities. At first they didnt like the blood.

Youll loose the consumer. The sleeping giant which is the consumer doesnt wanna hear about whether their systems might have been modified. They wanna play their old games with compatible next games generations, and they also want to buy the new hits. If everything else doesnt take a back seat, the company will loose;

Well, they can't just let people do what they will without taking any measures to prevent it either. Microsoft has enough resources where they can take up measures to prevent piracy on Xbox Live and simultaneously work on their game "portfolio."

How is preventing online cheating "stupid"?

Cheating is one of the main things that turns people off online play. The "stupid" thing would be to assume that it's not a problem and leave it be...
