As most of you know by now, I'm a musician and I'm currently in a 5 piece melodic/progressive metal band. We use 3 guitars, bass, drums, and 4 way vocal lines (though one of our guitarist's is our lead singer, all of us excluding our drummer share harmony/backing death vox). We try to find a good balance between heavyness and melody using both death vocals and clean vocals accordingly over a mixture of distorted/clean/acoustic guitar riffs & solo's.

We're about to start recording our bands demo in the upcoming weeks, I'll most likely post the songs 1 by 1 as they're recorded rather than waiting untill the demo is actually released, because you guys are special tongue

Now, a few little notes to get out of the way before I go on.

IMPORTANT ONE TO READ - These are mostly 2 guitars and bass and the 3 tracks are written by myself. The 3rd guitar parts are written, although Charles hasn't updated these yet with his guitar parts (he has a memory like an elephant, he just remembers everything). So try to imagine leads and solo's, it takes away from how repeatitive certain riffs sound.

- Midi doesn't sound real! My bands music doesn't sound like Megaman music, although midi does, which means these do indeed sound like Megaman music. Use your imagination a little.

- These should have midi distortion with transitions into clean/acoustic riffs and what not, aswell as bends/slides/vibrato's and things of that nature. If not, your computers midi card (is it even a card? Fuck if I know) isn't capable of handling it. If everything comes out sounding like piano or something, it's your midi card, not the midi's themselves.

- These are all written in C# minor with different modes and what not. Alot of metal bands use minor keys to write, and quite often tune half a step lower than we do. As a result, there may be bits and pieces that remind you of other songs. It can't be helped, there are only so many notes per key so some repeatition can't be helped (especially after 30 odd years of metal already written before us).

- I've written all of these in just the last few weeks, so there are still some changes to be made, but these are pretty close to finished. Also, every ending is only temporary, we're planning on having most of the album tie together and I'm leaving that to Charles who is stupidly clever at that sort of stuff.

Now, in exception for "...Of My Souls Decay" (which has lyrics/vocals already), none of these names are sticking. I always give midi's temporary names that are usually stupid and come from whatever I hear/see/feel at the time, they will be changed once lyrics are written smile

Prisoner Scandal - The Greg Turnbull Story - This is the most recent thing I wrote, so it naturally has a few creases I'm yet to iron out. The distorted solo about halfway through the song (over the acoustic riff) is a bass solo using a distortion pedal. Just because I play bass, it doesn't mean I don't solo too tongue

...Of My Souls Decay - This will most likely be the first song we record and you guys will get to hear. The lyrics/vocal lines are finished, the other songs are still awaiting vocals (Tim and I write the lyrics/vocal lines together, it takes a bit to get it feeling 100% right). Again, there is a distorted bass solo in this song over an acoustic riff. Much more fiddly than the one in the previous song which was more of a build up than a solo. You also may notice the 3rd guitar comes in for the acoustic riff, we actually had this written months ago for another of our songs we have since ditched. We all loved the acoustic riff though, so we used it for this song instead. This is also good to give an idea of what our soloing is like, as it has a 4 bar solo that Chuck wrote which comes in slightly after my own solo. Oh, there's also a solo about halfway through written by Tim. It isn't finished yet, so it stops suddenly, it isn't meant to.

Cold As Fuck - It's winter over here, this was written at 4 in the morning, the name should explain itself. Not much to say about the actual midi... Nothing at all, actually.

Skin Chooser - The ending riff which repeats a hell of alot has a long melodic solo over the top of it.

Corruption Probe - Named after a news report on corruption in the Victorian police force, which I know all too well about given the people I associate with, lol. This will be one of the slower more melodic tracks on the demo. I actually bothered to write temporary drums for this because I still had alot of time to kill once I had finished the other tracks, I'm not that great of a drummer myself and the stuff our drummer writes is about 10X better than what I write, so ignore the drumming.

Cell Level - The slides at the start of this sound shit, but that's midi for you... The clean riff in this is going to be changed, I got pretty lazy on that one I must admit.

Well, that's that for ya's. Like I said, midi doesn't sound real so you're best off waiting to hear the recordings before you pass judgement. This should give you all a rough idea of what my band sounds like, though smile

That would've been one of my previous bands, this band hasn't recorded as of yet. My writing/playing has gone through the roof since Amanda and I broke up, the whole being a single parent thing was enough to drive me to hours of writing and playing a day for the last close to year tongue

And unlike any previous bands I've done, this one not only has Metal Blade records eagerly awaiting the demo (sent them the midi's too, plus a few older ones we have since scratched), we have gigs lined up all around Melbourne and a place on the shelves of Metal Mayhem (biggest metal shop in Melb) secured too. Things are looking pretty good lately, we should be signed and touring before my sons old enough to talk, lol.

Haha, yeah man, that is a tricky one. I got really lucky. A quick little rundown on my bands history - I met these guys back when I was about 16, some of them I've known for longer. In about June of last year Tim and I decided to start a metal band out of pure boredom, a few weeks later we picked up a mate Sean on guitar (it was Tim on vocals, me on bass, Sean on guitar). Skip forward to new years eve 2003, 2 of our other mates who are already in a band offered to jump on board and fill the lineup. Shortly after that Tim decided to learn guitar so we could have 3 guitarist's in the band, in the 5-6 months he has been playing he has done nothing but impress the hell out of us. Just lately we added 4 way vocal lines to our sound, I've been getting lessons off Tim for a while now and it's paying off. Charles is a vocalist in another band already, and Sean can just naturally sing for some reason.

Most people don't have it that easy, we were all mates before we even considered being in a band together. It's just fortunate that we hit that 1 in a million chance of all of us being metalheads in an area full of people who much prefer gangster rap or pop.

Heheh, midi already sounds like polka without you having to use polka samples tongue

And this is just for a bit of fun, I tabbed out the MK theme for bass a while back. It's easy, wasn't hard to figure out by any means. It isn't the whole song in order, just the riffs from it -

MK theme for bass

I did this from memory, I haven't heard the actual song in years nor do I have a copy of it, so if it's a bit off, that'd be why wink

Wow, midis, I love it. I'd really like to hear your stuff once it's recorded, I'm sure it'll sound great! You've got some really solid metal stuff here, good luck to you man. I'm sure you'll find some measure of success.

This summer my band and I will be doing a lot of recording, so hopefully I can have some stuff to share as well.

Thanks for the feedback everyone smile

Migle - Cool, there are more Evergrey fans here than I thought...

ShadowSong - Definately let us know once you get recorded, I want to hear your band.

SkeletonofSociety - Streets of Rage is a great series, I used to love that game tongue

SubZero1589 - No idea why the hell you'd want an autographed copy of a CD by a band that nobody even knows yet, but consider it done. Might be worth some money if we ever get somewhere then one of us dies wink

One more of them here.

Anyway this stuff sounds great. I can't wait for you to record "...Of My Souls Decay". Love the shifts in tempo. So secksy. By the way, you've guys got a name or something?

And I'm surprised there are so many people here who are in bands. And for those of you who didn't know, StonedSour's band have always recorded a few songs.

And while we're on the subject of Evergrey I just wanna say:

FUCK!

They're coming here to my hometown to play in exactly a month. But I can't be here too see them. I'm going to Spain to play soccer.sad

But as of now, in midi files, i wish i could play classic MK to them. tongue

BTW, "corruption probe" is a cool name.

Saibot - I remember you being an Evergrey fan. My memory is a little hazy, but was it you who reccomended Stormwind to me ages ago? If so, I did end up d/ling them, and may I just say that the high notes the vocalist hits in "Eyes of Change" are just... Woah. I can hit the first really high note, but not the 2nd one, it's stupidly high and nearly causes internal head bleeding tongue

My band doesn't actually have a name yet, we're using "Fire Whisper" as a temporary name for the moment though. We were meant to think of something else well before we recorded, but there's a slight chance the name will stick if we haven't thought of anything else very soon.

Really sucks about the Evergrey gig, although Evergrey gig alot so I'm sure you'll get another chance. I'm just hoping they come out here in the next few years, with a bit of luck my band might even end up opening for them. With the Melbourne metal scene in its current state, there isn't much competition around. I saw Opeth a while back, the band who opened for them sucked worse than I thought a band could possibly suck, but apparently they were the best band in the country to open up for Opeth *rolls eyes*

SubZero - Best of luck with your band dude, if you don't get signed/sponsored straight away though, don't worry. The youngest person in my band is 19 and none of us have managed to get signed in any of our previous bands, so you've got plenty o' time smile

Cyborg_Wolf - Funnily enough, I was at training tonight and Chuck and Sean both agreed that Corruption Probe may actually be a keeper (the title, that is). I guess it's one of those stupid names that ends up growing on you over time, lol.

Raining Smoke - That's cool about your brothers band dude, best of luck to 'em grin
