My parents own and run a Beauty Salon for years, thay had tro relocate to another store due to the price of rent, so they picked out a store with lower rent,. only thing is it wasn't a beauty shop so my parents didn't want to hire a guy to do the vinyl tiling and painting and moving the funiture, so I offered to do it all one week so for for the painting and another week for the tiling, two weeks for non stop work, they gave me 100 bucks, was this a good deal, I feel for all I did it wasn't enough..but it's my parents so there is nothing I can do, but I'm in so much pain, I had so much work do do for hours, and whatever they picked about I fixed up to make them happy..I'mk not saying I want them to give me money, I didn't want to take anything but I took off work to do this and they insisted on paying me, but in your opinion was 100 dollars a good amount for 2 weeks of non stop work.

They are your parents, so it's understandable that they'd compensate you a little, but personally, I'd have given 200$ if you were my kid and had miss out on your real job.

I would have given you a bare minimum of $700 and I'm serious.

My parents had family do work around the house and if it's tile and painting, for someone to do both we offered much more than $100..

If they had a company do it, they'd be paying way more than just $700-$1,000 for that amount of work.

Not to mention, you missed out on two weeks worth of making money at work, which means that's should be an even bigger increase in money.

As my mom always said, "it's great to give family a deal, but that deal should be reasonable" for both parties. If you ask me, $100 is nothing compared to what they'd pay for a company to do it.

thank you guys, i feel bad alittle saying that about my parents but I was kinda insaulted because most guys that do this work get at least $500 Iyou all should of seen how many walls I had to pain, also i bought all the tiles and paint, so forgive me for complaining about this, i shouldn't of even taken any more at all but then again 100 is like a slap in the face, I rather of not been paid at all then.

Would you feel worse or better if they gave nothing?
I for one would've given more in a situation like that but at least these factors can affect: 1) your relationship with your parents, 2) the quality of work, 3) your parents' financial situation and finally 4) your parents' morals (and sense). However, remember that they are still your parents.

Always do a written contract.

Was this a good deal? On your parents end, yes. On your end, no.

Was $100 fair compensation for two weeks of nonstop work? No.

In the end you just have to remember that you were doing your parents a favor. It would have been great if they compensated you fairly, but in this exchange you were never meant to be the beneficiary. Your parents were. And you did a good deed and helped them out. I know that you don't have a direct fair result to show from it, but indirectly at least you know that you were able to help out your family and hopefully their business will be awesome and prosperous.

I hope they at least fed you well during that time. Do you live with them? If so, then it might make it easier to stomach the amount they paid you, but I have to be honest, if they made you buy the materials they needed, that's pretty extreme. At the very least, that should have been compensated.

Ive done a lot of consrtuction type work and you pretty much got boned. However it was for your parents, and I know that my parents prob would have gave me the same or said just do it. So it kinda sucks that you did not get paid what you should have, but what can you do?

What the f***?

I would have done that for free regardless how much my parents would have offered me.

To be honest, that's way too much work for a $100. But I guess the helping out part is more important, since they're family.

Mo mother is my employer so its worse for me.

I have to do whatever she asks of me even off the job or I'm fired. and I cant get better pay elsewhere so I am essentially a prisoner in my own house.

I easily work 70 hours a week and I dont get paid for more than 40.

If I turn her ass in everyone is homeless and I'm out of a job anyway.

Yeah. I'd have done it for free too.

I know my parents don't have a lot of money, so I'd be more inclined to help. Even if there was an agreement of $100 before, I'd have told them to keep it. A couple weeks of work, and a little back pain is nothing compared to the happiness I just brought my parents. They've done so much for me in the past, that I feel like I owe them.

...Not to mention, I could call it even around Christmas, after I've gotten a gift from THEM. wink

My friend has a philosophy in which he avoids working for parents for money because "the money is coming from inside". Instead, he wants to help them for free every now and then and make profit from a non-relative rather.
