It has been at least five years since I have posted here. I came here completely on a whim, thinking this website would have been long dead.
But I was wrong! It looks like this site has made a decent comeback, especially with the new games coming out and whatnot. Good to see. This is probably the only forum I was ever an active member of, from when I was 12 years old until I was probably 16. I would show up once every few months from there and completely stopped visiting after a while.
Anyways I'm gonna stop going on about that, 'cause I wanna go on about this.
Something I love to discuss with people is the mid-90's anime Neon Genesis Evangelion. It's one of my favorite shows, for many reasons; including but not limited to its philosophy, its politics, its characters, the stories, the epic battles, the great animation, the ENDING (holy shit), and definitely the history behind how it was created and how the writer (Hideaki Anno) had dealt with depression and anxiety during its creation. Most recently there have been the newer movies Rebuild of Evangelion, which have way better animation and add a different middle and conclusion to the story, meaning the movies start as a reboot and turn into a completely different story.
Anyways I was wondering if people had a favorite part or character or something from the show. Mine would definitely have to be Kaji, just because of how chill he is compared to most of the characters. Definitely something I tried to model myself by as a kid.

I still think NGE is one of the greatest pieces of media ever made - whether it be through the psychosis, character development, plot, etc.
I'm still gonna' buy an Asuka and Rei body pillow one of these days.

I think this series is a giant piece of trash honestly. I hated every single character with the exception of Shinji's high school friend in the black track suit. I have always felt that this anime aimed at the "lonely high school otaku" demographic, and even when I was watching this when I was in 11th grade I couldn't get through it from start to finish. I got to the last angel and then just said "fuck this" because my patience was worn thin.
It's also the anime that helped me form my distaste with the "whiny bitch protagonist" which Attack on Titan also has, and is similarly over-rated but slightly more tolerable.
I really, cannot describe in words, how much I dislike NGE.

MIlestone.
A lot of people try to put it up as some sort of deep, intellectual and spiritual conglomeration of ideas, when in truth it is pretty straightforward. What it does best is portraying people (mostly with severe mental problems). There isn't any great interconnective symbolic net behind it, there isn't some profound message concerning the nature of humanity.
The series is essentially about a man working out his issues, and describing interpersonal conflicts. Pretty realistically too, well, given how much realistic is when the background has hundred metres tall cyborgs...
Before anyone goes on about animu clichés and unrealistic people: I HAD to deal with problematic children when we had field training during university courses, I taughts some disturbed children and young adults. There are far more severe cases out there than the main three.
Here is the thing: NGE worjks absolutely fucking best when watched as a black comedy. When the series goes off the deep end the sheer amount of problems they have becomes inherently fucking funny.
It is overrated? Yes. Is Gainax milking the ever-loving shit out of the franchise? Yes. Is it particularly pretentious? Yup. Deliberately confusing? You got it.
But it is also well-paced, well written and expertly acted. Effort went into this. But it will not stand up through the enxt decade, most probably.
