You've probably heard by now, Nintendohas confirmed that they will show their next generation console at E3 this year. This IGN page has some very interesting information.

http://wii.ign.com/articles/113/1135489p1.html

I don't know how much of it is true, but it's pretty cool regardless. They're talking about how the new console will be much more powerful than the Wii and the PS3 and 360 (But my question is, will it be as powerful as the NEXT GENERATION Sony or Microsoft consoles?), HD, and backwards compatable with Wii and Gamecube games. It also says they are going back to a more traditional controller rather than a remote, but it will also have a touch-screen built in, which sounds awesome to me. Also, the name "Wii 2" is just what IGN dubbed it. The final name hasn't been revealed.

Update! The console has been dubbed "Wi U" (Which is a horrible name I think) and there are now some new pictures of the actual system and controller available.

(I will make it a link soon) Also, nintendo announces that a new Super Smash Bros game is in the works!

The codename Wii 2 seems to be going by for now is "Project Cafe".
Edit: I'm going to actually read the article before I state any more useless facts that are within the first paragraph of the OP's article. Durr.

"Project Cafe's controller is perhaps its most unique component, which isn't too surprising given Nintendo's history for unique control mechanisms. What is a bit surprising, however, is that Nintendo is moving away from the "remote" concept for its new design, opting for something more traditional."

THANK FUCKING GOD!

It's impossible to not start a "console flame war" in these kinds of threads haha. Seriously? Nintendo catching up? Haha. I guess in some respect. Even though you know, this generation we saw the Playstation Move and Kinect. Because those in no way seemed to show that Sony and Microsoft were the ones playing catch up.

Well the last generation consoles launched in 2005-2006. By the time the next generation Nintendo is released it will have been close to six years. Seems pretty much the same lifespan as the last generation.

I love the wii, but I think it focused too much on casual gaming. I want more games like Super Mario Galaxy and less like Wii sports resort. And better graphics and HD never hurt anyone.

Nintendo's profits have savagely ass-raped both of their competitors and now they are getting an early start at the next generation. like Microsoft did with the 360. and Nintendo's new system will only be ~$400. they aren't playing catch up and they never were. MS and Sony would have never made their retarded motion control systems if this was true. Nintendo saw the fact that the other two would start gaining on them due to the lack of the wii's power and now they are cranking out a standard system with motion controls and a innovative standard controller. sure the next two MS and Sony systems will probably be more powerful again. but Nintendo is still going to be cranking out a massive profit. Since they seem to value their customers more than the other two as well. I don't see them on the losing side on this new generation either.

And no I dont even own a wii, but I do have common sense, and if I see one console maker trashing the others through basic fact then I will point it out. At the end of the day I'm still a PC gamer anyway.

This should have been the Wii when it launched. I think hardcore gamers would have been more interested it it then. The thing is the Wii-U is pretty much caught between console cycles. I don't think a lot of people are going to jump on it right away unless the price is comparable to the Wii when it launches.

Absolutely NO FINAL DESTINATION!

A few friends have been running those stupid tourney rules to death and I've had it with FD.
