It's almost that time of year again, when we shift our mindset to pucks and ice! Today marked the first day of games in the inaugural season of the Champions Hockey League, which pits the best teams from Europe against one another to determine the one true champion! What better time to revive the hockey thread?

So which hockey team do you guys follow/root for? I follow as much hockey as I possibly can, but my team has always been the defending NHL Eastern Conference Champion New York Rangers.

Is Sonny Milano's defection from BC a sign of things to come? Will more players opt out of playing in the NCAA to play major junior?

Interesting article.

I'm not surprised by this development. Milano is good enough to at least get a 9-game look at the start of this season, so why not? It also allows him to get to free agency sooner, and when you consider that the Jackets already have 13 forwards under contract (and that's NOT including Ryan Johansen, who is still a RFA), it's not likely that he'll crack that lineup either this or next season. The only way I see him on the big squad next year is if Foligno, Gibbons, and Letestu are all allowed to walk with no replacements.

The more I try to analyze this, the less I believe we'll ever see Milano take the ice for the Jackets. Maybe he should've stayed in school after all.

I am disappointed, honestly. I don't hate BC as much as other teams in Hockey East (before I went to Maine, I openly cheered for BC on their bandwagon whenever they made the Frozen Four, which they did often), but this makes the Hockey East league worse. I love college hockey. I would love to see the game expand at the collegiate level to more schools, and to have more people follow the game there. What I worry about is that colleges will have a hard time competing with the major junior leagues and the allure of what could be a "faster path" to the NHL.

Not to mention BC is a very, VERY strong school when it comes to academics. I understand that some guys will never need a true education if their ability is outstanding, but what about the other guys? College does a lot of things for people, not just athletically.

A team in Las Vegas?

Multiple sources are stating that an NHL expansion to Las Vegas is imminent. Also, Seattle, Kansas City, and Quebec City may be in serious talks with the league as well.

One source

Second source.

The expansion situation has me miffed, honestly. Expanding by four is stupid, it should really only be two. If I were able to have free reign over franchises, here's what I would do:

1- Move Florida to Quebec.
2- Keep Arizona and Carolina where they are, with the understanding that they can be moved (as rumored) if they continue to struggle.
3- Expand by two, with both teams in the Western Conference.

Here's how the divisions would be affected:
Metro - Unchanged.
Atlantic - Florida becomes Quebec, the rest unchanged.
Central - Expansion team in Kansas City.
Pacific - Expansion team in Seattle.

Arizona can move to Portland (Oregon), while Carolina would go back to Hartford unless a non-Toronto Canadian city steps up.

You do realize that would leave Tampa Bay all by its lonesome in that division with the other 7 teams all the way up north, right? That might not be fair for them to have all those divisional road games of that distance. You'd almost have to switch at least one team out of the Metropolitan to alleviate that travel load some.

But I just want to see if they do put a team in Seattle. Day One jersey buy.

Well, it was pretty stupid to put two Florida teams with five northeast teams (and Detroit) in the first place. Also, Tampa and Florida already travel more miles than anyone in the Eastern Conference under the new format. It wouldn't be much rougher on the Lightning than it already is.

Yeah it would. Tampa would have to make more road trips up north for a divisional opponent that's currently right next door. The other 29 teams are the ones that benefit from having to make less trips to the state of Florida.

Same here. Being from Boston, I have to root for the Bruins and as far as college hockey teams go, I just simply like the Maine Black Bears logo.

As far as other teams go, the only Canadian team I actually like is Toronto. I was a huge Felix Potvin fan.

Also Tim, are you doing another fantasy hockey league this year? I'd like in again. It was fun last time.

So? 29 teams only have to make 1 or 2 trips to places like Dallas, Glendale, Winnipeg, and Nashville, all of which aren't particularly close to any "rival" opponent. It's no different.

Yes, I will most likely be running fantasy hockey again. I'm trying to get settled on the number of teams I want to have this year, but I can tell you that it won't be 20 again since more than half didn't really pay attention to it.

Just did my first fantasy draft of the season. Here's my roster:

Steen - Stamkos - Kessel
Schwartz - Dubinsky - Hossa
Lupul - Kesler - Ryan
Coyle - B. Schenn - R. Smith
Henrique

Karlsson - Ekman-Larsson
Krug - J. Schultz
Maatta - Leddy
Vatanen

Halak
Mason
Stalock

(note: I'm trading Bobby Ryan to another team for Ben Scrivens to get a third starting goalie and dropping Stalock for a Kucherov after)

I'm pretty satisfied.

Gagner (IR: Datsyuk)

Karlsson - D. Boyle

Focused more on forwards and goalies this time around. I'm pretty satisfied with this team too.
