Pixars winning streak is over
Pixars winning streak is over
It had to happen eventually, but Pixar has made their first critical flop, Cars 2, their first "rotten" movie on Rotten Tomatoes with a current score of 34%. That's shockingly low. Even the abysmal "Mars Needs Moms" scored higher than that. "Shark Tale" got better scores than that.
It's the end of an era, and a phenomenal run, and I'm sure Cars 2 will still make a lot of money and sell a ton of merchandise, but their flawless streak has officially ended.
Just sort of shocking. I thought Pixar movies might be good forever, like a universal law: grass grows, birds fly, and Pixar makes great films.
Well, it'll be exciting to see Kung Fu Panda 2 and Rango duke it out for the Best Animated Oscar this year.

Oh failure! Haha this reminds me of someone (was it you?) who said Lady Gaga's era was over as well because she fell from #1 to #2.

It's disappointing, but Pixar making a dud was bound to happen eventually. Though honestly, I didn't have high hopes for Cars 2 anyway. Chances are I may not see it in theaters and will give it a rent. Hopefully, they won't go through with a third one after this.
Now "Brave", which is Pixar's next film for 2012, has really caught my attention and should hopefully do better.
Movie looks fucking gorgeous. <3

Yep! I'm really looking forward to it.

No, it wasn't. I don't follow Gaga or listen to any of her music or her trends or anything at all. My only experience is overexposure to "Poker Face" and "Bad Romance" and her mind-blowing audition at some talent show in 2006 where she was 100x better than she is now.
And I don't mean to say that Pixar is now forever on the decline and we should all abandon hope of them ever matching their former brilliance. Quite the opposite. "Brave" absolutely is one of the movies I'm most excited about.
The "end of an era" is Pixar's flawless streak of positively received movies. With the except of the original "Cars", every last single Pixar film has scored 91% or higher (the top rated movie of all time is "Toy Story" at 100%" and at number 4 is "Toy Story 3"). The "era" of guaranteed critical success is what has ended.

Rango was a very pleasant surprise for me. I quite enjoyed it. Rattlesnake Jake was creepy as hell, though.

I've been getting really tired of Pixar the last couple years.

Probably not, but you should still be ashamed.

Yes. And you should be ashamed for having such an opinion.

It wasn't perfect, but did you know A Bug's Life was a sort of insect-themed remake of The Seven Samurai, one of the greatest, most epic, most macho films ever conceived and put on celluloid?

Same movie premise, just with circus bugs instead of hungry samurais defending the town.

Garlador, change the name of this thread to "The Official Akira Kurosawa Appreciation Station". The Pixar discussion can only offer so much, while a discussion about how incredibly manly Toshiro Mifune is could fill up 100 pages in a matter of days.

Let me put it like this. There isn't even a consensus on what's wrong with Cars 2.
Everybody says something completely different:
"Mater's annoying! No wait, he's charming and the best part of the movie! But I hate Larry the Cable Guy anyway."
"The movie's too adult oriented! Or maybe it's not adult oriented enough and parents will be too bored with it. movies that pander to adults are out of style anyway."
"There are too many spy references! The spy genre is dead! No, wait, the spy jokes are too pedestrian, they should've gone all out with them!"
Add a bunch of shitty car jokes. Like every single one of these reviews is packed with car puns and it makes these writers look like the tools they truly are. So forget about them, they're stupid. Or at least just find one or two reviewers you trust...

I can see what you're getting at though. It's been generally expected that anything stamped "Pixar" is going to be great. Oh well, we all fall off the horse at one point or another.
Pixar has been a good company, I still haven't lost my hope on Pixar though I haven't watched any animated movies recently. A little off-topic but did Andy age in Toy Story 2 if he goes to the college in Toy Story 3? I have only watched the first one when it was in the movies. I loved it back then.

Yea, I don't know what anyone expected of Cars 2, because the first Cars was cringe-worthy. Also, I refuse to pay to see another Toy Story movie and I refuse to accept its existence... I don't care how good it is. Toy Story 3 was so beautifully done and wrapped everything up that another movie can only fuck it up, not to mention that it looks like a total money grab when one isn't necessary.
