I think my cock uppercutted me in the mouth. The original is still the most important sci-fi movie after Metropolis, and perhaps Blade Runner.

So what's the big deal. José Padilha's remake will hit theatres in February after a long, LONG and painful pregnancy. This remake was controversial ever since it's inception, and the production even more so. Yes, I am looking at you Aronofsky, you directorial movie-to-movie jumper.

OK, so this isn't a remake in a sense that it will retell the original story. There are key elements different, and the focus thankfully is not the same. At first sight. I am happy that from what I can tell this will be a different movie.

Detective Alex Murphy gets blown up via car bomb, looses left side appendages and needs to be reformated into Inspect... I mean Robocop.

The suit is not that bad, the moviement looks slick. Slick as in contemporary weightless sci-fi metal style. I am torn on this. The slow RC in 87 had charisma due to it being an immense towering behemoth. It gave the character pathos and charisma. But also, contemporary levels of pseudo-technology already render that obsolete.

The original suit is there reworked. It is also used for combat, so it's not just a one-scene bonethrowing. There is also one-liner dropping, a bit forced perhaps.

All in all, this can go two ways. It becomes the Total Recall remake what had good intentions but fell ill, or Dredd, what was at first a failure but it is a Goddamn ambitious and actually EXTREMELY well made movie. It looks generic, perhaps the content will actually make up for it. The actors are heavyweights in this.

Detroit is a shithole in this.

I saw what I was expecting to see in this trailer from the begining - modern sci-fi approach to the style and atmosphere.

I am curious on how they will retell Robo's story and how they'll approach emotinal angle and what role OmniCorP will play in the whole picture.

So far I am very interested in this project.

I was debating on creating a thread last week when I saw it. It looks interesting for a remake, but I'm not totally sold on the changes. I'm open to see how they play out though. At least it still has a similar dark kind of 80's movie vibe to it like the original.

I really appreciate the fact that they've clearly taken the original framework and looked for the areas that weren't addressed. The humanity of Alex Murphy as Robocop was obviously a big deal to the original film (and its sequels), but the trailer at least gives the impression that the remake wants to dwell more on the lead-up: The corporate, political and human decision making that went in to creating a man in a machine.

At the same time, it seems like the emotional core is coming through a contemporary commercial American filter, so it's a lot less impressive. Maybe there's a commentary under there ready to be enjoyed in the full theatrical release, but I've now got suspicions there isn't. Maybe the trailer is deliberate, simplified to pull in a crowd conditioned to anticipate the likes of Transformers 4. It's awfully convincing.

Perhaps most frustrating is that it really seems to scream sequel, to me.

Obviously the key points reference the original they're remaking, but as they unfold, the comparisons are about disconnect, and how well things have been upgraded. The Hollywood and tech mentalities that inform both the creation of the movie itself, and the fictional machines within it, seem ripe for a series that was built on satire as much as sci-fi.

Maybe there'd be a criticism that Robocop 2 already transliterated the sequel themes into its plot, but you could also argue it simply established precedent. Corporate greed and social vacuousness are as rampant as ever. Just as the original showed disregard (or contempt) for the human element, this film could've very easily shown a world routinely burning its history in favour of referencing and reliving it in shallow, under developed ways.

It's early days. They might have some surprises in store for those who make the trek to the theatre. Here's hoping.
