Self-righteousness in our opinions & viewpoints

t's a sad, but very real part of our human nature.
I will not lie, I allow myself to do this sometimes. Everyone does at one point or another. People have a tendency once they form an opinion on something to treat it as the Gospel. Having an opinion is somehow considered good enough to deem it holy.
But the truth is everyone has different thought processes and experiences, that brings them to their conclusions. I think the majority of things come down to perspective, hence noone will ever be completely "Right", or completely "wrong". It is all a gray area.
It would be much simpler if the world was black and white, it would. But viewpoints are the key. If someone disagrees with you, they are not malicious, and chances are, they probably think the same in regards to you.
People are self-centered at heart, and it is probably our first nature to see things through our own eyes. And in our own eyes, we already know the reasons why we hold the opinions we do already. The problem is others do not. But we get offended when others do not see it the same. 'Surely you cannot blah blah blah'. People neglect to think over the fact that this person is coming from a different angle. A lot of times people also fail to explain their thoughts and opinions, and will just throw them out there, expect total agreeance, and damn the skies should anyone dare to disagree.
I am not putting blame on anyone in particular. EVERYONE does this at some level.

I hate to quote an extremely overrated band, but what they say is extremely true: We must strengthen our communication. We teach our children tolerance to the point where you can't express your views without violating someone else's defense. Everything that might offend someone is meant to be kept private. True, this may bring peace, but at the expense of growth and progress. If we don't debate, express our views, or throw our ideas onto the table, nobody will understand each other. It's as if each individual person is building a box around himself/herself.
And that's where this self-righteous bullshit comes in. People won't even listen to others because they're brainwashed to the point of believing they are right and everyone else is wrong. They consider all outside ideas irrelvant because they think they contain the ultimate truth. But if you put them in a situation where they're forced to defend their values, then they'll have no choice but to reconsider they believe is right and wrong, and to meditate on why they believe what they believe. Again, we're back to the importance of communication.
That's why I get so pissed at liberal P.C. preaching. Teaching tolerance without understanding is just fuckin' dangerous.

In everything in life there is a health medium. Well you may think many people's kids are taught to keep everything private that might hurt someone, I see many people push issues like these not for the purpose of debate, but as harassment.
In regards to changing people's minds by forcing them to debate: I would keep in mind that there is not a right and wrong answer to all moral issues, that said, people will still reach different opinions. It may be convenient to think that everyone is just being ignorant, but for every time you think others need to be FORCED to rethink there views, I challenge you to spend 10 minutes questioning your own.
We ought not think about changing people's mind, but we must feel how we can all come together. That doesn't require thinking the same, believing the same thing. I think American society has become a breeding ground for people forcing their views on others. People should be able to debate these things, but unfortunately most people aren't mature enough to leave it at that. For instance, work at a high level position and don't support republicans...no matter how good you are at your job, you won't be treated the same at most companies. It's because religious extremists, power mongers, and the like, that debate turns into reality when it effects people at work, home, church, etc.
