Silent hill 4 looks decent enough, but i have read mixed reviews mostly that the combat is worse than the previous games, it's a shame as it does look to be the most frightning of the series,I have the soundtrack and it is the best one by miles, if they could get the game to play as good then it would be truly the best survival horror game.

Well, I just finished playing Silent Hill 4: the room... it sucks you guys...

SH 1, 2 and 3 were AWESOME!! But SH4 is terrible... it's not even scary... and the way the character moves and the gameplay suck as well... the game is dreadful...
I'm really sad, 'cause I used to be a fan of the series ...

I don't care if he said SH4 is horrible, I'm still going to buy it. I've been a fan of the series since the first one in 99'. It's the only game to ever give me nightmares. I've played and beaten them all so far. I love this game series and will always be a loyal supporter, and player.

Silent Hill 4 was a mixed bag for me. There are some great things about the game, but some things really do suck. Here's my overview:

1. Graphics- still strong, still disturbing, and still like the Manson-family's house on crack. Real-time models were used, like in SH3, but, unlike SH3, the graphics weren't as good. That's a bit of a problem, since graphics are supposed to get BETTER. Anyway, while not SH3-quality, they're still much better than SH2, or 90% of all other PS2 games for that matter.
2. Combat- Actually, opposed to what was stated above, the combat is surprising well-done. There are pressure sensitive combo-meters that adjust the length and strength of an attack combo, which provides a much more hard-hitting and action-packed experience.
3. Sound- Still creepy. Still wonderful. Still perfect. The voice acting is surprisingly top-notch, and sound effects are just as brilliantly played out. Less radio noise and more monster moans. Only complaint is that the dogs all sound like screaming jaguars. I've heard that sound before.
4. Soundtrack- Akira is a soundtrack god. Easily the best soundtrack in the series, it is an interesting mix of classic SH tunes mixed in with R&B, pop, rock, and blues, but his atmosphere music still blows them away as his unsettling compositions continue to sink into my head more often than any monster I face. Brilliant.
5. Gameplay- Okay, here's where things get ugly (and I excluded combat because that's almost entirely different.) Many changes were incorporated to make the game seem more action-packed and "tense". They succeeded... for a while. However, it soon becomes very mundane and eventually tiresome and a chore to continue. Many problems arise. Unkillable enemies who can travel through walls, though a wonderful idea on paper, was poorly executed, and the constant avoiding of them and the frustration of never being able to get rid of them leads to maddening experiences and not the tension team Silent Hill was looking for. Also, it is almost half a game. Meaning, you travel through the game to the half-way point, pick up a partner a'la ICO, Resident Evil Zero, etc. and then must RETREAD and BACKTRACK through every location you visited before with nothing really changed. A shame, since SH had always differentiated itself from that horrible notion. Also, the main hub is still the Room (and the most creepy part of the game), but it is also the only place you can save and unload your items. Which brings up a horrible turn of events: you have a limited inventory. Yes, SH has become RE. What's worse, if your inventory is full, you can't just drop the item; you have to go back to the room; and if your inventory is full and you try to pick up an item, the game won't tell you what the item is. Ammo, also, takes up more than one slot if you try and pick up more than one box. ARGH! A huge step backwords, and a huge disappointment to SH fans. Also, a lack of good puzzles, and bland combat-driven gameplay, creates a very un-Silent Hill like experience and not what fans of the series have come to expect.
6. Storyline- Without revealing much, SH4 easily has the best characters and storyline of any game in the series, making the excrusiating gameplay almost worth it. SH4 ties in heavily with SH2, and the Room, and a certain man named Walter, all of them coming together to create a very dramatic, tragic, and almost sad tale of lost innocence, corruption, fear, paranoia, and desperation. The entire game contains symbolism that irks and crawls under your skin. The characters and actions easily undermine any fear you might get from the monsters (which, after you've seen them for the 100th time, isn't much.) A triumph of game-storylines.
7. Re-playability- Regretfully, not much. As stated, it's an incredible chore to plow through the game, and the endings are varied enough or detailed enough to really warrant another play-through (unless A. your ending really sucked or B. you really want to see Cynthia and Eileen in skimpy, fetish-built bonus costumes.)
8. Overall- SH4 is without a doubt a failed and poor inclusion in the series, which is a shame because, given a different emphasis, rather than on combat and backtracking, and a different form of exploration (basically, a game with gameplay like previous SHs), the game could have become one of the greatest games ever. As it is, only its phenomenal storyline carries it afloat. The gameplay simply ruins one of the most thought-provoking and soul-seering experiences of all time.

Storyline: 10/10
Re-playability: 5/10

ok ur kiddin about the limited inventory right? AHHH that is gonna be seriously hell, cant you just like drink health drinks and stuff to get rid of it, instead of going back to the room?

...on the other hand its kinda creative, plus you have a place filled w/goodies, kinda like a safe house (i doubt its safe though lol)

on another note does anybody know if Silent Hill 3 is gonna be released on the XBOX? like any news wat so ever on it, i cant find jack shit, which means its probably not gonna happen but i will cross my fingers hoping Konami will come to their senses and release SH3 on XBOX dammit!

Well, in my opinion, the first 3 Silent Hill games were EXTREMELY scary!!
But SH4: the room is not! Again, this is MY opinion

SH4 is NOT scary at all! It's not even dark! You don't even use the flashlight, 'cause the lights of the places are always turned on... After 20 minutes playing it I got very bored!
And I have to disagree with Garlador, I thought the story was weak compared to the previous Silent Hills...


As for LinkinParkFreak, Silent Hill 1, 2 and 3 ALSO gave me nightmares... they were awesome! I am a HUGE SH fan... But IMO SH4:TR sucks!

Cool, i heard alot of people saying SH 4 sucks but i want to give it a whirl. to be honest, i LOVE being scared, i loved it when you are walking in the hallway at night and in your mind you thought there is someone watching you and want to kill you (which there is no one). OMG! i love it.

anyway.....i havent played SH1. ever since i played SH2 (and the first horror game that made me like horror), i was trying to search for it but cant find it any store (yeah, i know, i could buy it online but i dont trust the internet shopping), but i heard its really scarey.

but i'll try SH4 just for the heck of it, even though you only could carry limited supplies and have to back and forth to your apartment, so and so. but im still searching for the game that makes me scared of everything.

P.S. you want real scare, try Fatal Frame 2:Crimson Butterfly, omfg!!!, that game made me see things (and im not kidding)

you should try the online shopping, u can get games for cheap at ebay and stuff, i got my silent hill 1 game for i think $9. im not sure how much it is now though

maybe i'll try to buy SH1 online, but did you buy a used or a new? if used, does it work?

i bought it used, and yep, it works great, in perfect condition, even the case looks new. i dont know wat i would do w/o ebay lol, ive bought so many games on there, recently i bought wolfenstein for $13...not too shabby

well i havnt played any of the previous 3 games but i got a free demo disc with my playstation magazine i thought it was pretty good. The zombies are a bit hard to kill but i guess thats what makes the game harder. im still deciding whether to get it as i havn't read any reviews of it yet.

yeh that would be awesome, like the exact game but w/better graphics, maybe some new weapons and stuff, but not changing the levels or anything...silent hill 1 on xbox...that gives me the chills *buuurrrrr*
